Default GoFundMe removes anti-LGBT lessons campaign page

The crowdfunding website GoFundMe has taken down a page launched in June by campaigners against LGBT education in schools.

Humanists UK had twice demanded the page be removed because it contravened GoFundMe’s terms. There had been no response until GoFundMe was contacted for comment by the Guardian on Tuesday morning.

The website took the page down, saying: “We have removed this page as it violates our terms of service.”

According to the terms, crowdfunders may not use the site for “campaigns we deem, in our sole discretion, to be in support of, or for the legal defence of alleged crimes associated with hate, violence, harassment, bullying, discrimination, terrorism, or intolerance of any kind relating to race, ethnicity, national origin, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, sex, gender or gender identity, or serious disabilities or diseases.”

The page was set up by Shakeel Afsar to raise funds for legal fees to fight a high court injunction against him and others protesting near Anderton Park primary school in Birmingham. It has raised £9,500 against a target of £30,000.

Bloody ridiculous...the page is about education in school..

So I don't see how it contravenes the terms of use.

Interesting spin, completely false but you got to love the attempt to defend the homophobes.

This isn't about 'education' it's about homophobes opposing a program that basically says 'gay people exist and they are no different to you and me' and trying to rally other homophobes to their cause using someone else's platform. Gofundme is ultimately a privately owned platform and if they don't want hatemongering on their website then they don't have to tolerate it.

Great, what the protesters are standing for is ridiculous.

If they were smart they'd have started a petition on the government website, which ironically would probably lead to the best results - I think there should be some professional guidance with the teaching of LGBT stuff in schools, with recommendations as to how to approach the subject, suitable materials, etc.

It's about homophobes using excuses to justify their hate and people like you basically endorsing such hatred by trying to defend it.

I don't hate nobody thank you...especially not homosexuals...nor am I defending the people protesting..

I do however have an issue with go fund me banning this page as I understand it being about what's taught in class to young children.

Do you have an issue with people being treated equally? Do you think LGBT people should be made to feel different? Made to feel that their existence isn't suitable to children? The whole program was just telling children that gay people exist and that it's okay. Do you have an issue with that?

This is the second time in this topic I've told you what the program was and you ignored it the firs time to stick with this 'I'm concerned with what they are teaching children' act. You're choosing to ignore what it is because it completely cuts down your argument.

GoFundMe reserve the right to refuse service to customers, especially ones who would use their platform to raise money for a discriminatory purpose.

They can practice their bigotry at home.
The public sphere is secular and everybody must obey the law of the land.

But they dont teach them about sex or gay sex at that age.
This is more sociology type thing that some people are gay and some families have two dads or mums.

This country has a soft approach to religion.
In France it would be a different matter

Third time telling you this, they aren't teaching these kids about sex, they are literally just normalising the fact that some people are gay and some people are straight and that all people should be treated the same regardless.

I think the fact that you are basically plugging your ears and going 'LALALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!' in regards to this speaks louder than words. You say you don't have a problem with gay people but you obviously do if you're clinging to this false idea that kids are being taught about sex when it's literally just about acceptance of different people.

Yeah it’s really not a difficult concept to try and wrap your head around. You’d have to be quite dim if you can’t understand it.

That's pointing out differences in people to little children, the very people that all study show do not judge people...but let's force a difference upon them...

Don't make sense to me that people would point out differences in people to people who don't see differences to begin with

You think kids are stupid?

They see differences alright, they just dont mind them.
But they still need explaining why they exist and that they're alright. Before they come across a bigot who will screw them up.

You're jumping through a lot of hoops to oppose these lessons.

Teaching kids that there's nothing to fear or hate about gay people from an early age could prevent them from being radicalised to hate by their environment and if it doesn't, well there's no harm in trying because it's worth it if you can reach even just a few kids that might otherwise end up hating gay people. There's literally NO reason to oppose this if you don't actually hate gay people.

One of the little books for the kids was read out last week, think it was on newsnight or bbc news.
All about a little penguin with a daddy and another daddy.
Can’t see how anybody could be offended at their kids having th8s read at story time.
