That's sad and a shame

But we also went on UC a couple of years ago now and yes we had to wait 6 weeks but I didn't have to have sex with anyone! You have to make it work another way surely?

I'm a left leaning person ... but I don't agree with the sentiment in this article. If she came here legally she could have worked and sent a portion of her wages home.
Being on benefits those are for her and her only sending those away meant it was her choice how she subsidised that and she chose prostitution.
However not having settled status now means she can't work even if she wanted to, which is the real reason people could be forced into prostitution.

This story seems to be more about overall entitlement to benefits rather than the 5 week wait? However, I agree that the wait is ridiculous... one of the worst parts is that the official gov.uk says (or at least did, last time I looked) simply "you will have to think about how you will support yourself during this time". The clear implication is that they think people on benefits who know they are going to be moved over to UC should "have saving set aside" for those 5 weeks. It just show a ridiculous lack of understanding of the income levels of people on benefits... having savings of any kind is near impossible. Most common scenario is that people end up in £1000 - £2000 debt over those 5 weeks and then it follows them forever.

Know what's most baffling? It tried to outline as a POSITIVE that "only 3 in 100 people experience sanctions". 3%! That's tens of thousands of people ffs.
