I know sign language and have BSL level 2 qualification because I have deaf family members. I can get by in French as a traveller, but not enough to have in depth conversations with any locals about the new traffic systems and governmental taxation or anything.

I’m pretty good at Spanish now, they actually understand what I am saying

Irish abit

And I have a few stock French sentences so that qualifies me for 4

Oh following on from Slim, I know Makaton signing from working in a special school

I always knew the words for things in Spanish and Gav never did but they could never understand when I said it, then Gav would say it and they'd instantly understand him, it's so annoying because his Cork accent is much stronger than mine aswell

It's easy enough to pick up to be able to communicate on a basic level, so that you can communicate with any deaf person, although it's easy to cheat because you can spell things out if you need to. It get's more complicated to be at the level of a translator (which I'm not), but you have to be at level II before you can start that training.

It's quite funny because there are some really racist old signs that have been changed over time. The old sign for Ireland was flicking at your shoulder or the back of the hand to signify flicking people into the sea, and the Americans used to use the sign for potato (not sure if they still do)

It’s really complicated but most of my ancestors either come from India or Kenya. My dad was born in Kashmir, while my mum was born in England but her parents are from Nairobi and currently live in Canada. The Arabic came from my dad’s parents who lived in the Maronite community of Cyprus for most of their lives and brought it over to teach me (which took forever mind). Unfortunately, my dads parents are no longer with us so hopefully I can continue that legacy of teaching my future kids what I learnt

No need as English is so widely spoken and all good telly and songs are English. And the sooner they stop wasting kids time with pointless languages like Spanish German or French the better

I had German friends over with their kids this year. My nieces were there and were older than the German kids but couldn't speak a word of German. The German kids conducted entire conversations in really good English. And that's what you're endorsing Trumpet.

I think you’re forgetting that English isn’t spoken everywhere and shouldn’t be the only dominant language spoken, especially in a diverse country such as this. I think it’s useful to learn these types of languages if you potentially have clients that might not speak English or if you go abroad

People in the UK need to speak English end of, if you don't want to learn it then leave. Life is hard enough without that going on.

Language is beautiful. Of course people should strive keep the languages of their cultures alive. I don't speak Hebrew by accident. People really need to speak English here in the UK, but not to the exclusion of other languages.
