Default Coronavirus outbreak

100 years on from the Spanish flu

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-51215348

Quote:
Wuhan, a Chinese city of nearly nine million people, is to temporarily shut public transport as it tries to halt the outbreak of a new virus.

Those living in the city have been advised not to leave, in a week when millions of Chinese are travelling for the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday.

The airport and train stations will be closed to outgoing passengers.

Bus, subway, ferry, and long-distance transport networks will shut down from 1000 local time on 23 January.

Those living in Wuhan had already been told to avoid crowds and minimise public gatherings.

Meanwhile, after a day of discussion the World Health Organization's emergency committee has not yet decided whether to declare a "global emergency" over the virus. Discussions will continue on Thursday.

The outbreak has killed 17 people, and there are more than 500 confirmed cases.

The virus originated in a seafood market that "conducted illegal transactions of wild animals", authorities said.

It has spread from Wuhan to several Chinese provinces, the US, Thailand and South Korea.

Late on Wednesday, Chinese authorities confirmed the number of dead had almost doubled - from nine - in the space of a day. All fatalities so far have been in Hubei, the province around Wuhan.

Officials in Hong Kong also reported the territory's first two cases.

Known as 2019-nCoV, the virus is understood to be a new strain of coronavirus not previously been identified in humans. The Sars virus that killed nearly 800 people globally in the early 2000s was also a coronavirus.

A global emergency is the highest level of alarm the WHO can sound and has previously been used in response to swine flu, Zika virus and Ebola.

Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the WHO said more time was needed to reach a decision. "This is a complex and evolving situation," he said.

"The decision about whether or not to declare public health emergency of international concern is one I take extremely seriously and one I am only prepared to make with appropriate consideration of all the evidence," he added.

Chinese officials said the country was now at the "most critical stage" of prevention and control.

"Basically, do not go to Wuhan. And those in Wuhan please do not leave the city," said National Health Commission vice-minister Li Bin in one of the first public briefings since the beginning of the outbreak.

Earlier this week, China confirmed that human-to-human transmission of the virus had taken place.

Signs of infection with the new virus include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

The first US case was confirmed on Tuesday. President Donald Trump said the situation was "totally under control" and that he trusted the information being provided by Chinese authorities.

...yeah this is very scary, we were talking about it yesterday...as well as the planet’s ‘immune system breaking down’...as is the human immune system...and making way for the rise of the super viruses...so sad for everyone who has lost their lives...and how many more....

Its quite scary, I mean with it being chinese new year too there will be a lot of travelling. So it could easily spread

I clean at a university. We have a lot of chinese students. I just worry if a lot of them come back from china all it takes is one to have caught to spread. So im going to be extra cautious with my PPE!

That said bearing in mind the population of china. 500 confirmed cases and 17 dead isnt that big a number. I think a lot of these headlines are scare mongering. I bet if we did a headline of people who die of flu in the uk we would be suprised at the number!

It's a scary prospect when you are trapped in a place and know there is a bad virus that could hit you at any moment

I caught the swine flu virus a few years ago and that had me on my knees for a couple of days ... i won't forget that in a hurry

the reason being this is just the start of the outbreak and it's a nasty one. Many people say they have flu when all they have is a bad cold. When you actually get flu, you know the difference, you are completely incapacitated.

i've had proper flu twice in my life, and i am no youngster ... you know it when you get it.

just don't hold chinese new year for this year, out of caution then

new year is a festive event yes, but no one wants this virus to spread further

Depends who you talk to. My youngest niece thinks 25 is ancient.

You should have been preparing for this Parmy. Don't you read Nostradamus?

Moral panic???

I definitely don't think we need to start building underground bunkers and quarantining ourselves any time soon. This seems a lot like the Ebola outbreak to me, aka, the media will only report on this illness for as long as it poses a threat to the Western world. And when it doesn't, we'll be led to believe that the disease has been wiped out and nothing more will be said.

It's a cruel thing to say I know, when lots of people will probably die... but I think nature keeps trying to reduce the population and every time it does, we find a cure. Malaria is close to a cure now... which means millions saved in the poorest countries. All the environmental good will in the world counts for nothing when we're seriously overpopulated now... and in fifty years, it will be insufferable. People will go hungry, crops fail, countries march.... and on and on.
