But in 1977:
[Many executives in Hollywood
came to his defense. Gailey's attorney arranged
a plea bargain in which five of the six charges would be dismissed, and Polanski accepted]
He went to prison for 42 days.
Then:
[Polanski was told by his attorney
that "the judge could no longer be trusted"
and that the judge's representations
were "worthless". Polanski decided not to appear at his sentencing. He told his friend,
director Dino De Laurentis,
"I've made up my mind.
I'm getting out of here."
On 31 January 1978, the day before
sentencing, Polanski left the
country on a flight to London]

Vile man.

Makes a cracking film though.

Chinatown and The Pianist are both in my top ten films of their decades.

"Should he be in jail" and "should he win this award" are two completely different questions. But they have the answer - yes.

This is why I say there's alot of hypocrisy & double standards especially in Hollywood and certain people get protected , I'm surprised anyone is still calling out his sleazy past .

It was as if Polanski got let off the hook for what he did, people continue to watch his movies and ignore or forget what he's done while other people's reputations get ruined .

But I will say you can't boycott everything, where do you draw the line?? . You can enjoy the movies and not like the director himself. Sometimes you can seperate the art from the creep.

The jeepers creepers director was convicted of child molestation , and people still watch his movies .
I dislike jeepers creepers anyway though.

I watched the ceremony last night because it was going to be messy and French media were talking about it non stop for a week. And indeed it was...bad.
Protesters outside, people were uncomfortable in the audience, the host (a very popular stand-up comedian) made several shady hidden remarks towards Polanski, Adele and several women walking away, the whole board of the film academy quitting a week before the ceremony. A whole mess.

Overall, France being this "popular" and "glamour" film scene in the world, the question of whether to split the man from the artist has been debated so many times over the last years since the #metoo movement. Adele was sexually assaulted when she was younger by a famous film director, a write recently wrote a book about another very famous writer abusing her when she was a teenager etc etc And now Polanski (who didn't attend for obvious reasons) has been rewarded. A lot of cases will be judged in due time.
If you read online comments, people are going insane over this question, whether to seperate the man from his work or not.

By the way, Adele walked away because it was just unbearable seeing such a director winning an award. Even the host left afer this "best director" award, writing "disgusted" on her instagram. Strong moves.
At least it's talked more than Coronavirus in French media today.

Even if he did serve (what's deemed as a) "proper" prison sentence, he'd have been out of jail for over two decades by now. Even if justice was properly served, he'd be a free man.

For the record, I think child molesters should be killed castrated while awake.

True.

But this was a directing award, not a citizenship award.

That's the whole debate in France, should we seperate the man from his work or not? Because the movie is not bad, but the director is. It applies to all fields really. Should the life of an artist/political men/writer/businessman (and women too) come over their work, or should it be linked?
In all cases, it looks bad on the film academy's part.
