Default We need to introduce fines

Given the news about all the parties that have had to be broken up by Police in the past 4 days alone, it's time for fines

Listened to guy who rang in from Germany yesterday (Irish we get everywhere ) they hand out on the spot fines if you are breaking the guidance, if you can't pay there and then it will come out of your salary/benefit, or if under 18 parents will have to pay

Once again the UK is far too soft, this weekend is going to be carnage, with hot weather predicted until Sunday

if there is a large break in the lockdown, it basically resets the clock on everything, so it will be like day 1 of lockdown again. It's unfathomable that people don't understand this. The lives that will be lost ......

Its not just about being soft though; that's German efficiency. We don't have quick or interlinked systems, it would be an administrative nightmare (probably an impossibility) to implement salary seizing on that scale. And that's even if admin departments and company payrolls were operating at full capacity which obviously they're not, and can't be without ruini g lockdown .

So at best you're saying "You'll be harshly fined... At some point...!" and the people who are reckless enough to be doing this in the first place, are not thinking that far ahead.

There is already system in place for fines, maybe just utilise the parking ticket system Spain and France are also fining so its not just Germany efficiency as Spain is the most ineffective country in the EU with regard to admin, there is also a system in place for fining dog owners for fouling the pavement, I think something can be tweaked, it might only take a few fines for the muppets to finally take notice, hit them in their pocket

Do you know what usually happens if you ignore a parking ticket?

Nothing.

Months, years, of empty threatening letters. Eventually threats of court action. That usually doesn't happen either. Usually the letters just stop.

A small percentage of people get taken to small claims court "to make an example" but most people never actually have to pay a penny... They rely on compliance, and people believing that there will be consequences for not paying.

It only takes a few fines to send a message, its needed at this stage

There's no point in an on the spot fine of more than a few hundred pounds because most people don't have access to the money... And then you're into the situation above. For most of the people throwing bouncy castle parties in their garden, if you ask for Ł5k up front you might as well be asking for a million.

Take their NI number and pass on to HMRC/DWP..... okay they might never take the fine, but how many people are going to risk that?

How can you possibly know that lockdown working better across Europe is down to the introduction of fines?

Most normal people wouldn't, but I'd think the small number of people who are most likely to risk that are probably the same people who would risk throwing a garden party during a pandemic...

Let's not advocate for the "benefits" of police brutality Cherie.

Depends how many there are on an average sunny long-weekend . I can't say I know what that number is, to be fair. Probably significantly more than 660 though.

What do you think should happen, TS, to people who flagrantly break the rules and put other people's lives at risk?
