The latest "big change" in coronavirus infections across the UK is of "great concern", England's deputy chief medical officer has warned.
Prof Jonathan Van Tam said people have "relaxed too much" over the summer and "we have got to start taking this very seriously again". If not, the UK will have "a bumpy ride over the next few months", he warned. He said that infections among younger people in EU countries had later filtered through to older age groups. His comments came as more parts of the UK are to face tougher restrictions following a rise in the number of cases. On Sunday UK authorities announced 2,988 new cases - the highest figure since 22 May, while a further 2,948 cases were reported in the 24 hours to 09:00 BST on Monday. Stricter rules on home visits will be extended to two more areas in the west of Scotland from midnight. In Wales, the county borough of Caerphilly is to be placed under a local lockdown from 18:00 BST on Tuesday. "People have relaxed too much, now is the time for us to re-engage, and to realise that this a continuing threat to us," Prof Van Tam said. He added that hospital admissions and deaths were "at a very low level" in the UK and the rise in cases was most prominent among those aged between 17 and 21 - but the country risks following the trajectory of some EU countries. "Where case numbers rise initially in the younger parts of the population they do in turn filter through and start to give elevated rates of disease and hospital admissions in the older age groups, and we know that then becomes a serious public health problem," he said. "The fact that 17 to 21-year-olds are not becoming ill means they are lucky, but they also forget because the disease is not severe for them that they are potent spreaders." https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-54065793 |

I love the way young people are getting blamed for the spikes and the government and media are completely ignoring the hoards of angry middle aged conspiracy theorists gathering in the centre of England for a mask free COVID-orgy

Up to Ł3.5 billion of furlough cash stolen or paid out in error, HMRC boss says...
The Government believes it may have paid out up to Ł3.5 billion in wrong or fraudulent claims for the furlough scheme. Jim Harra, the top civil servant at HMRC, said that his staff believe between 5% and 10% of furlough cash might have gone to the wrong places. “We have made an assumption for the purposes of our planning that the error and fraud rate in this scheme could be between 5% and 10%,” the permanent secretary said. He was speaking in front of MPs on the Public Accounts Committee. The Government has so far paid out Ł35.4 billion in furlough cash, according to the latest figures. It means that somewhere between Ł1.75 billion and Ł3.5 billion could have been paid out wrongly. “That will range from deliberate fraud through to error,” he added. “What we have said in our risk assessment is we are not going to set out to try to find employers who have made legitimate mistakes in compiling their claims, because this is obviously something new that everybody had to get to grips with in a very difficult time. “Although we will expect employers to check their claims and repay any excess amount, but what we will be focusing on is tackling abuse and fraud.” It is the first time HMRC has spoken publicly about the level of potential fraud that could have been committed as part of the job retention scheme, which covered up to 80% of an employee’s salary while they were on furlough. The Government rolled out the massive scheme at breakneck speed, causing many experts to say that a certain amount of fraud was inevitable. Furlough is now winding down and is expected to end for good next month, however businesses who bring staff back from furlough will receive another Ł1,000 if the employee is still in work by the end of January. By August 16 this year, 9.6 million people had been put on Government-supported furlough, with 1.2 million employers claiming the support. Meanwhile, around 2.7 million self-employed people have claimed around Ł7.8 billion in support from the Government. Mr Harra said that an academic study has estimated that the level of fraud and error might be even higher than 10%. https://uk.yahoo.com/finance/news/3-...153045231.html |

This post sums up my shopping trip to the local convenience shop.
True story: Out tonight. Local convenience store. Entire queue at the check out.. maybe 10 folk... all fairly spaced apart but by no stretch of the imagination, 1+ 2 mtrs apart. All bar one, in that queue (about 9 people plus kids) are not wearing masks, kids, adults, beefcake lads, mums with kids,... none of them..., ... not a one... ... except this one bemused looking lady, in a 3 day old, standard ****wit issue, black 'reusable' face mask possibly crawling in bacteria..... She looked around, a dozen times... and I could actually see her thinking... .... and then yes!! Without prompting or badgering, without a single word said, she quietly took off her mask, and stuffed it in her pocket... I actually watched her BREATHE... It was a wonderful sight, I can tell you... Whether it was just the air, or the air and the relief, I don't know... but I watched a person breathe deep lungfuls of air, that, until then, they had foregone. I could tell that she had recognised, and faced, her own fears, simply because of the strength she gained from all those in the shop. That is where our strengths really lie... |
