But the R rate has come down across the UK in the last week and in March it was 3, more than double what it is now .... so someone isn't giving us the right figures

I disagree here. In no other area of public life do we leave danger up to common sense, otherwise we wouldn't have drink driving or seatbelt laws.

I dont think those comparisons are good examples here, the main difference being that this ongoing situation is unprecedented there were no laws or rule books on how to go forward with it and most countries governments are doing similar to the UK so bringing up people who voted in the tories is a pretty moot point in this thread

Thinking people would apply basic common sense in regards to this situation is a pretty fair expectation IMO

Now this is a bad comparison

I agree that comparisons aren't good examples when it comes to a pandemic, but I only used them to show we don't actually do this in any other area of life.

I disagree about the tories point though, because they've demonstrated over and over again their unwillingness to actually follow independent advice, and instead they've used the pandemic as an excuse to give money to their friends, which shows their focus has been on completely the wrong things.

I say this with vulnerable people in my family. I planned to go and spend a few days with my folks a couple of weeks ago, so I isolated to make sure I was clear as my ma will die if she gets it (COPD). As it turned out they had stuff they needed to do so I ended up isolating for 2 weeks, just to go and have lunch with them.

I'm fortunate that I was able to do that in the first place, but when impositions are being put on peoples lives, there is a need to mandate things, because I'd wager most people will subscribe to the "just this once won't hurt" practice, then once they were safe that once, the floodgates are open.

If only we could have foreseen the massive second wave forcing people back to work, encouraging people to dine out for half the cost to help the economy and forcing people back to school and university would have caused, who could have predicted that?
