COVID lockdown can only be eased once 20 million are vaccinated, warns Chris Whitty...

Nearly a third of the UK will have to be vaccinated before COVID restrictions can be lifted, England’s chief medical officer has warned.

Speaking at the Commons Science and Technology and Health and Social Care committees on Wednesday, Chris Whitty said lockdown rules could not be eased until some 20 million vulnerable people are vaccinated.

I thought they said a while back that 60% to 70% at least had to be vaccinated

55% of the population and above vaccinated is required for herd immunity. The restrictions will ease as hospital beds usage and deaths decrease. By the summer I think things will be pretty good

A friend and ex-colleague of my wife got the first jab today so I'll let y'all know if she grows two heads or whatever.

If it was this time a month ago my wife would have probably had it at the same time. She's low-priority in her new role, though, as they're not doing much (if any) face-to-face.

Part of the funds will be channelled to the distribution of life-saving doses of Covid-19 vaccines to parts of Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation said on Thursday it had pledged $250 million in additional funding towards the global campaign to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

Part of the funds will be channelled to the distribution of life-saving doses of Covid-19 vaccines to parts of Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

"We have new drugs and more potential vaccines than we could have expected at the start of the year," said Bill Gates in a statement.

"But these innovations will only save lives if they get out into the world," he said.

Funding is one of the biggest hurdles for Africa, home to some of the world's poorest countries.

The World Health Organization has identified the goal of vaccinating 3% of Africans by March 2021 and 20% by the end of next year.

But it said only around a quarter of 47 countries on the continent have enough plans for resources and financing.

Coordinator for the Gates Foundation's Covid-19 response in Africa, Solomon Zewdu said part of the funding announced Thursday would help ensure that vaccines reach some 780 million people on the continent.

It is critical to make sure the vaccines "are effectively financed to find their way onto the continent and the least appreciated corners of Africa," Zewdu told AFP in a virtual interview.

"The focus right now is to say ...how do we get those vaccines beyond the tarmacs of particular airports like, you know Addis Ababa airport, Kinshasa, Lagos into communities and immunise people. Unless that's done then we haven't done the work."

WHO estimates that getting the vaccine to "priority" population sectors in Africa will require $5.7 billion, plus 15-20% for delivery, syringes and other injection material.

Africa has recorded more than 2.3 million cases, of which 54,800 have been fatal.

South Africa, which with more than 828,000 cases is the continent's worst-hit country, on Wednesday said it had now entered a second wave of the pandemic.

i know this might've also gone into the vaccine thread, but since the donations are for further research and handling the coronavirus pandemic, it is more appropriate it goes in here

Boris seems to hold him in high regard though so his opinion will be listened to I think.

No advisors make decisions on anything.. he knows what he is, he's an expert. Whether the government listen to him or not is up to them.

We are already well aware of the excess deaths from ignoring expert advice on covid over recent months.

MPs need to remember what they are. . Public representatives and do what is in OUR interest which is listen to experts.

the restrictions have always followed the bed capacity and death rate. Im quite sure there will be social distancing and face masks for the majority of next year. So, tier 1 to no restrictions is a way off.

They will try anything to keep London out of Tier 3 ....they were happy to lump most of the north in with none of the rapid testing that was meant.to happen in Tier 3 but now its looming for London out come the rapid tests.
