A star primary school headteacher was today suspended for claiming that
some teachers were 'sat at home doing nothing' during lockdown in an
interview about the wider reopening of schools across the UK.


Pauline Wood, from Grange Park in Sunderland, is being investigated for
potentially bringing her school into 'disrepute' during an interview on BBC radio
in which she blasted some teachers for not pulling their weight.


But others rallied to the head's defence and praised her 'refreshing honesty'.
One Twitter user wrote: 'I think Pauline Wood deserves a pat on the back for
being honest. I work with teachers every day and I can guarantee some
really are lazy. Some have not worked 10 hours a week let alone flat out.'

I gather the parents of said kids were really trying to make them work, as well... but no, blame a profession for not being your children's carer as well as educator.

She was the headteacher who is due to leave the school in a few weeks .. sounds like she was settling a few old scores with some of her staff and it’s completely backfired... it’s so disappointing to hear stories like this surfacing after all the weeks we’ve spent risking our lives ( and families) ‘caring’ for all the key worker kids and vulnerable children !

I'm "only" a TA so I've not been as busy as some of my colleagues, but we've certainly not been sitting around doing nothing.

I mean, it helps there are only about seven kids per class, but still

Its still doing a risky job though... if any kids are gonna be carrying the virus it’s surely more likely to be the kids of key workers .

I’ve just spent over 30 hours in school this week - over 20 of those supporting pupils in class plus a 3 hour , online , safeguarding course .

The rest spent catching up on constantly changing guidelines ... admin / emails ( endless emails ) and correspondence with parents .

I'll be honest and say that it felt like my daughter's teacher put in less and less effort as time went on. The work being provided was plentiful at the start and he was making videos talking them through how to do it (like you'd get in class). Towards the end, he was posting screenshots of worksheets on his laptop (not even cropped ) and linking to random YouTube videos for the explanations, half of which were clear as mud. Some of the work was far too simple for her level (she's 10 but working at S1 level which is around 12) and other work was so far in advance of it that I actually laughed - I struggled with it and had to google things to refresh my memory! Honestly just felt like the guy had run out of steam and was posting up whatever he stumbled across. I'm also pretty sure he stopped marking the submitted worksheets in mid May.



Scottish schools are done for the summer now anyway and they (assuming nothing goes horribly wrong) will be back in class in August, so it's not a huge problem. She was already ahead of her level and still is. There are some kids who really struggled to keep up though (and of course, others who haven't attended online classes at all) so I think they're going to have their work cut out for them next year getting kids caught up.

You get lazy feckers in all industries. Not really reason to tar a whole sector of workers with the same brush.

Truuue, her teacher this year was sh** long before the covids, so not a huge surprise. They all like him because he's laid back and lets them get away with stuff like swearing and pranking each other, but when it comes to actual teaching he's been ... lacklustre. It's his first year as a fully qualified teacher.

Oddly enough one thing that really surprises me is the number of children who when they’ve returned to us have no recollection of their system login details or password or their school email address and password... it may not sound much on the face of it but it suggests that they probably have been signing in much ( if at all ) for all the online work over the past few weeks / months .

...it feels like a typical divisive media headline...I’m pretty sure that all teaching staff in the country have not worked to exactly the same work load because how each school has been ‘open’ has not been exactly the same and pupil needs have not been exactly the same etc...so she’s probably stating something with a degree of accuracy because it could equally be applied to many/most other varying roles in a workforce over the country...whether it be in the actual classroom or a virtual classroom, there will always be more motivated teachers and some, not so much and she’s experienced and knowledgeable enough to know that and to deal with it accordingly in her own school...announcing it publicly as she has is just shabby and will gain nothing to improve her school moral and motivation...

She is leaving and settling some scores, rather than suspending her, mabye in the short time left, the governors should be concerned about which teachers in the school are under performing and as a duty to the parents and kids work with her to identify them and resolve the issues, working from home doesn’t suit everyone, it takes discipline and motivation so maybe some are lacking those skills
