I wonder if it's related to flooding? There was a bit of debris on a few roads this morning, possible that something larger like a boulder has been washed onto the tracks/mini-landslide.

Related to the storms and rainfall last night then (it was absolutely crazy, I've never seen anything like it in the UK). I can't help but think that they should have been more cautious with running the trains though... the weather was so obviously extreme that landslides seemed to be not just possible but actually likely. Like I said above, a fair bit of minor land debris on the roads today and railways are even more prone to it.

Problems of the track near that area
The Extreme rain last night has effected much of the track
this train is reported as first early train
after 6AM.
And The River near that track has burst its banks.

['Landslip' caused ScotRail crash that killed driver 'and one other':
Train derails and bursts into flames on 'water-logged line'
that track operator warned 'was closed' due to floods just minutes later]

Horrible news the poor driver and victim, he must have done all he could or this would've been a lot worse judging by past derailments and the speed of trains today.

Police have now confirmed 3 are sadly dead
including the Driver,

[ScotRail horror crash leaves 'three dead, eight injured and
one missing' after a landslip caused train to derail on 'flood-hit line'
Train came off the tracks at 9.40am close to old Carmont railway station,
near Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire
Class 43 Inter7City train from Aberdeen to
Glasgow had six crew members and six passengers on board
Suspected cause was a landslip and ScotRail train involved
was made up of a locomotive and four carriages
Dramatic video footage shows smoke billowing from
the area with 30 emergency vehicles sent to the scene]
