You understand that Britain wasn't the only "empire"? I mean, you'd get that idea from the left leaners here who seem to hate this country.

You know the Roman Empire did terrible things, but that's fine, it was a long time ago... so how long until we can appreciate a British patriotic song while at the same time having the brains to understand what the empire actually was and what it actually did.

The British empire is (by a considerable margin) the largest and most wide-reaching empire in global history... and also... as far as I know, the Italians aren't singing patriotic songs about the Roman Empire .... nor the Byzantines... nor the various Reichs... haven't heard many blaring trumpets for the Mongols either.

I don't have any massive personal issue with the songs but I do think that, in general, patriotism need not include conquest. I do think there's an issue with overall British and especially English culture where the concept of national identity and patriotism is heavily linked to Empire, so there's a struggle in knowing what to sing about if NOT "ruling the waves". Most countries have anthems that are much more "inward looking" - even the ol' Star Spangled Banner is about "America at home" and not their global activities.

Quite. The world's history is long and bloodied. Black people have been slavers, white people have been slaves. All races have been slavers and slaves. Virtually all races have built empires.

To act as if any people alive today should feel guilty for their ancestors is just stupid.

If you're left leaning you hate the country?...

The Italians aren't singing songs from the Roman empire are they? It's history.. brutal and undemocratic history.

The Divine Comedy, Irish band, they sing about the roman empire as it goes

You know, if you have any mind at all,
Gibbon's divine "Decline And Fall"-
Well, it sounds pretty flimsy
No more than a whimsy ...
By way of contrast,
On Wednesday last
I went to a marvellous party

...they‘ll be orchestral versions/no lyrics...but only for this year, they’ll be sung again next year...(..assuming COVID restrictions allow...)...in my own opinion, this has just all been media hype led and slantEd as it was all only being discussed for many reasons and restrictions were a huge consideration also... Dalia Stasevska, sadly...has been receiving much online abuse and personal attacks... she’s been mad a target for such venting, when any discussions that may have happened for adaptIon this year for various reasons etc...have been with all of the musicians...

Even if we accept it's about Freedom (I don't), the white natives in this country for most of the time of our empire, were not far off being slaves themselves, so exactly what freedom?
