Gal Gadot reunites with Wonder Woman helmer Patty Jenkins for historical drama Cleopatra



It is a role that until now has belonged to the legendary Elizabeth Taylor.

But on Sunday, Gal Gadot confirmed that she will star as Cleopatra in a new movie to be directed by her Wonder Woman helmer Patty Jenkins.

'Cleopatra is a story I wanted to tell for a very long time. Can’t be more excited and grateful,' the Israeli actress, 35, shared on her Instagram.

Gadot added: 'I love embarking on new journeys, I love the excitement of new projects, the thrill of bringing new stories to life.'

The ambitious project will go into pre-production at Paramount Pictures which won a bidding war between Universal, Warner Bros., Apple and Netflix, according to Deadline.com.

It's not known how the story of the Queen of Egypt will be tackled in this new retelling of the famous legend.

In 1963, Elizabeth Taylor portrayed Cleopatra as a beautiful seductress who had affairs with both Julius Caesar and Marc Anthony as she sought to hold onto power as the Roman Empire expanded.

The script for the new film is being written by Laeta Kalogridis, who penned the screenplay for 2004's epic Alexander as well as Leonardo DiCaprio starrer Shutter Island in 2010 and 2015's Terminator Genisys.

It's not surprising that a major Hollywood studio would be willing to embark on such a high profile project and commit to a theatrical release, given that 2017's Wonder Woman, starring Gadot and directed by Jenkins, was the highest-grossing live-action film by a female helmer.

The highly anticipated sequel Wonder Woman 1984 is currently in release limbo due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

of course not, when you make a movie about a historical figure, we do not need silly theme songs

i'd suggest Hans Zimmer for the soundtrack

and i hope the production team has done their proper research on Cleopatra as she was such a complicated person

if Gal can pull this character off, i will put my hat off, since it is really a complete different direction than wonder woman, also with such a well known historical figure every detail needs to be perfect

Wasn't Cleopatra Macedonian Greek in ethnicity though(even though she was born and raised in Egypt)? I read that before (but I'm not 100% sure how true that is)

she was a descendant of its founder Ptolemy I Soter, a Macedonian Greek general and companion of Alexander the Great. After the death of Cleopatra, Egypt became a province of the Roman Empire, marking the end of the second to last Hellenistic state and the age that had lasted since the reign of Alexander (336–323 BC). Although ancient Egyptians were black africans and they'll most likely be played by middle eastern looking people.

by that logic Gal could play her (cuz she also spoke hebrew)

but would make more sense for this historical drama, to make it more realistic which is what you aim for in this genre, to look for some actress with a greek background as that is where her main heritage is from

so maybe a new talent for this part, and other roles, i'd suggest Ben Kingsley would be a good one in this too, given he already had some experience with historical figures

I don't think Ben Kingsley is appropriate after browning-up as Gandhi.

We also have accounts from Ancient greeks like Aristotle and Herodotus who described these people as black.

That article itself, admits that the findings from that study are based on one site, so isn't conclusive in anyway.

I learned recently that Ben Kingsley is half Indian. He had an Indian name which he changed.
