In his new memoir, “Greenlights,” “Dallas Buyers Club” star Matthew McConaughey revealed that he was a victim of sexual abuse several times during his teenage years.
Released on Tuesday, the memoir tells the story of 50-year-old McConaughey’s life through moments he identifies as green, yellow or red lights — events that caused him to advance, pause or stop. The Oscar-winning actor then details how each moment taught him a lesson and how he has moved forward. In the beginning of the book, McConaughey shares several facts about himself to set the scene for the rest of the book, which include his personal experience with sexual abuse. He revealed that his first time having sex was not consensual, and that he was “blackmailed” into it. “I was blackmailed into having sex for the first time when I was 15,” McConaughey writes in his memoir. “I was certain I was going to hell for the premarital sex. Today, I am merely certain that I hope that’s not the case.” McConaughey also reveals that he was “molested by a man when [he] was 18 while knocked unconscious in the back of a van.” Though he does not include many more details about his experience, McConaughey affirms that he does not consider himself a victim of the situations. “I’ve never felt like a victim,” McConaughey writes. “I have a lot of proof that the world is conspiring to make me happy.” McConaughey also discloses details about his parents’ tumultuous relationship, his marriage to Camila Alves and his personal philosophy in the memoir. ...it’s interesting how he’s said this and then goes on to say that he doesn’t at all consider himself as victim’....?....I mean that’s pretty huge ‘victim’ stuff...knocked out and raped in a van..?...but it’s not somehow, how he sees it....interesting... |

...I mean it’s kind of non news really or non ‘revelation’ other than to tag his book if he feels that being knocked out and non consensual sex isn’t a victim situation/experience..?....odd...

He sounds messed up in all honesty, maybe he doesn’t feel like a victim, but he felt the need to put it in his book, and did the attacker get away with it, not the best message to be putting out there

Elsewhere in the candid memoir about McConaughey's fascinating life, he reveals that his father died while 'at climax' with his mother.
It’s what we all really wanted to hear isn’t it

It's a more common thing than people expect, sadly. It's quite sad that he doesn't consider himself to be a victim, it sounds like he might not have ever really processed what happened to him, he acknowledges it, but he sounds like he is burying it. If that's the case, I hope he can come to terms with it one day and heal from it as best as anyone could, in that situation.

I hope he meant by that, that he doesn't let it rule his life or effect how happy he can be?

I think he maybe means that you can acknowledge that you were the victim of a crime, without becoming "a" victim in life, which sadly many people are not able to do - at least without significant help.

Quand il pleut, il pleut

...I found this earlier which is from 4 years ago in November 2016...
Matthew McConaughey Helps Students Get Home Safe at University of Texas, Austin It’s all part of UT Austin’s Students United for Rape Elimination program... Matthew McConaughey is an Oscar-winning actor, a philanthropist, and an amateur musician, and now the 47-year-old can add another title to his long list of jobs: chauffeur. No, Matthew hasn’t picked up a few shifts as an Uber driver in between films; rather he's taken to shuttling students at the University of Texas, Austin around campus to ensure that they get to their destination safe and sound. It’s part of the university’s Students United for Rape Elimination program, or SURE WALK for short. The service provides students with “volunteer companionship on your walk home” every night from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. On Monday evening, The University of Texas Student Government Facebook page posted a photo of one of their most recognized alumni participating in the program and driving four students to their homes on a rather swanky golf cart. “Longhorns take care of each other, and it's 'safe' to say Matthew McConaughey agrees,” the photo was captioned. “Don't forget to use SURE Walk when traveling home late at night; you never know who might pick you up!” Facebook users have chimed in: “Proud of our UTSG!! Thanks Matthew McConaughey for being a safe horn!” one wrote. Of course, no mention of Matthew McConaughey would be complete without a joke incorporating his signature catch phrase: “Hope nobody needs to turn left. Because that golf cart is only going alright, alright, alright…” said a fan. While the photo is good for a laugh and a smile, it's important to recognize the program Matthew is participating in exists to help prevent sexual assault and ensure safety of students on campus. The statistics on college sexual assault are truly staggering, and until we change campus rape culture — until there's a societal understanding that no one is "asking" to be sexually assaulted, and that no one has a right to your body except you — sadly, programs like this will continue to have to exist. |
