In other words, vaccines being 90% effective should mean less than 1% of cases end up in hospital. In theory.
i hope you are right, more than 500,000 new infections a week is a bit troubling to me i have to admit. It's one thing to be vaccinated and feel pretty safe if the infection rate is low, as it has been here, but that volume of daily new cases isn't exactly comforting

To be honest true dailies most likely exceeded 100k over winter, it officially hit around 70k and testing still was nowhere near what it is now. I’m also not sure it will hit 100k - though it certainly could. Anyway, as always the true metric is deaths… if you look at the graphs for cases across the whole pandemic you can see deaths increasing and peaking alongside cases in both Spring 2020 and the Winter wave but the cases uptick over the last month has been equally vivid - and yet the deaths graph continues to look almost flat.

The only real risk is a vaccine-resistant mutation which is certainly a possibility and is the main reason we should have waited another month/6 weeks until we get to peak vaccine antibodies in the community but… oh well.

Food chain Pret says it is now selling its Christmas sandwich - five months early, or seven months late, depending how you look at it - after it was closed over some of the festive period in 2020 because of the pandemic.

Pret says the sandwich will be available to buy for one month.

Sorry however I'm not impressed already with Javid.
I wasn't when he was Chancellor.
I have a feeling he too just won't listen.

[Covid: Heathrow to trial fast-tracking vaccinated arrivals
Two of the world's biggest airlines will trial
fast-track lanes at Heathrow airport for
fully-vaccinated arrivals.
Under the scheme passengers on four routes
will be able to upload their vaccination
status before boarding.]

[The trial by British Airways and Virgin Atlantic comes
as the aviation industry calls for quarantine-free travel
to the UK from lower-risk amber list countries.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps is set
to announce such a scheme this week.]
