While it is likely more transmissible than previous variants, Omicron is also "highly unlikely" to completely evade vaccine protections, the World Health Organization's emergencies director Dr Mike Ryan said. "The preliminary data doesn't indicate that this is more severe. In fact, if anything, the direction is towards less severity," he said in an interview, insisting though that more research was needed. Dr Ryan also said there was no sign that Omicron could fully sidestep protections provided by existing Covid vaccines. "We have highly effective vaccines that have proved effective against all the variants so far, in terms of severe disease and hospitalisation ... there's no reason to expect that it wouldn't be so" for Omicron, he added, pointing to initial data from South Africa, where the strain was first reported. However, Dr Ryan acknowledged that it was possible that existing vaccines might prove less effective against Omicron, which counts more than 30 mutations on the spike protein that dots the surface of the coronavirus and allows it to invade cells. Top US scientist Anthony Fauci echoed the WHO's view, saying Omicron did not appear worse than prior strains based on early indications - and was possibly milder. The new variant is "clearly highly transmissible," very likely more so than Delta, the current dominant global strain, Dr Fauci told AFP. "It almost certainly is not more severe than Delta," he added. "There is some suggestion that it might even be less severe."

[An exact time is not yet known, but BBC journalist Lewis Goodall
tweeted that it could be at 5.30pm. The most common time for major announcements throughout the Covid pandemic has been 5pm. It is thought that new Covid restrictions could be introduced as early as tomorrow.] [What should we expect? Downing Street sources say “no decisions have been made” over introducing the measures outlined in its winter Plan B. However, fresh rules are expected to include an extension of self-isolation rules for all contacts of confirmed Covid cases, not just Omicron as is currently the case. Mask mandates are likely to be extended to more settings including schools, and there could be a return for check-ins at hospitality venues. There are two more key changes that could be announce if England moves towards Plan B. The first is the return of work-from-home guidance, and the second is the introduction of vaccine passports for large venues. Despite these being the restrictions listed when the Government first announced Plan B back in September – along with mandatory mask-wearing, which has already been reintroduced – i understands that the Prime Minister will stop short of actually calling the move “Plan B”.] from this link https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/bo...ctions-1341330 |

Why are people defending Boris because he has said sorry. This government is a joke. They have broke the rules throughout not just this party business. Yet expected us lowly ones to stick by the rules. Even the queen had to sit by herself at Phillips funeral. Why did we do it, why did she do it. Because the pandemic is a problem and we care. The government simply do not care. This Christmas act like Boris and gang would!!

UK Government are doing everything right if any government is a joke, my nation's government is, but then again i don't think idiots like Wilders, Baudet would've done better, in fact they would've done worse with lesser measures or no measures at all and millions of covid cases and millions of deaths

what we need here is military force, lock the public up under military guard, install curfews and only to leave your homes with correct paperwork, stricter testing policies
either a double negative pcr-test or 3 times jabbed and this should be regularly checked and double checked under military supervision to protect our doctors from anti-vax and anti-lockdown idiots

of course Boris was aware ... it's his office, it's his staff
Anyway, any new restrictions will be ignored and the police cant prosecute if the majority dont comply,. People are kidding themselves if they think the population will accept new restrictions if there is no obvious increased threat to health |

He's still in doubt there was a party. He clear knows there was a gathering with drinks, food and other activities. Well you can't observe the rules in that scenario. You can't be social distancing, wearing masks etc. He hasn't really apologised at all. He's still in probable deluded denial as to a string gathering/ party. They're his staff, in his PMs residence. He's kicked it in the long grass, or TRIED to, at present. More evidence of his incompetence and negligence and ignorance. However all of those 3 things are his self styled way of deliberate political deceit in my view. Not something I admire in anyone. I'm surprised you do. |

They'd have to inform him. If they didn't then that should be a sacking defence. The fact he's trying to duck the issue more than likely shows he did know and even agree to it going ahead. |
