[Italy's president has asked the former head of
the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, to form a new government after the previous coalition collapsed. President Sergio Mattarella said Italy needed a "high-profile government" to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic and the worst economic crisis in decades. Politicians failed to agree a coalition following the resignation of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte last week. Mr Draghi will now have to put forward an administration that leaders support.
