“There is an important conversation going on around fake news and its impact on vaccine uptake, particularly in BAME communities. [However,] there are other issues at play that need addressing, including deep-seated multigenerational reservations and fear that some people in BAME communities have about accessing the NHS,” Begum said.

“That fear is often based on past experience, whether incidents of simple misunderstanding, cultural confusion or, in the case of some patients, an outright fear of perceived hostility and racism.”

Experts and politicians have expressed growing concerns over vaccine scepticism within minority ethnic groups, prompting the government to launch a targeted publicity campaign to increase confidence. In January ministers pledged a fund worth more than £23m to try to quell the spread of misinformation about the vaccine and in the past few days politicians and celebrities have released videos to encourage people from BAME communities to get the jab.

Vaccine skepticism is stupid when it's antivaxxing Karens who think the jabs will give their kids autism, and it's even more stupid when it's ... Whatever imaginary reason they have to not want the Covid jab.

Have there been stats from each demographic released? I know its everywhere at the min that 15% of the BAME community are refusing. But I find it hard to believe it would be significantly higher than those not of that community refusing? I suspected takeup might not be as good as planned though, due to the 'politicians answers' that have been given on the topic when takeup is asked about on the news. I am actually a bit surprised at this being publicized..as it could very well lead to even more refusals, once people know its not too uncommon to refuse.

Either way, I don't really see it as selfish. Especially given while the vaccines appear to somewhat stop spread (or its looking that way anyway), they were marketted as 'will make infection less severe', in which case, someone saying no doesn't affect others. Also I feel a bit uncomfortable labelling people selfish for having an..unknown medical procedure really. Yeah vaccines are common and generally safe, but there are a LOT of (mainly older..so not as likely to be influenced by social media conspiracy posts either) people who feel its all been rushed..might have side effects..say they will get it months down the line when theres more data..etc. Have been having issues trying to persuade my mother in law that really, its not going to be too much different to the flu vaccine. It doesn't really help that the person in her street who has had it, claims they were told that if they feel spaced out for a few days, thats normal Clearly they remembered that wrong, or misheard, but stuff like that is properly panicking a few in that area..I have said I do not for a second believe it, and there must be a mistake. Have compromised slightly on..if the GP tells her that also, actually says it, then she should refuse at that stage. But its just such a silly rumour. Mind, there have been multiple very serious issues at our doctors for almost a year now, so I can maybe believe some arsehole working there has said something 'joking' and its been taken seriously or something..

Luckily we will likely be able to get away with a fairly large proportion of people turning it down. We don't need 100% protection, and some will now have natural protection anyway.

I don't see this as too much of a problem while the numbers remain low. We would have an issue if it was like..50% of people saying no though.

Am actually now wondering, if the amount of people refusing..is why it seems to now be the plan to vaccinate all over 18s. If 'the vulnerable' were covered, that would be good enough really, but if many of 'the vulnerable' refuse to get it, then the rest of us will need to do it instead.

there is a very real danger of making the problem worse by saying why are [particular group] refusing vaccination because they will just dig their heels in more. it's not mandatory, if they don't want it when offered it, they can opt in later if they want to. The uptake rate will keep going down as they go through the age groups. Also, saying we need x % to get herd immunity is meaningless because it's never going to happen because it needs to apply world wide. If the hospital admissions settle at a low level, then let people live their lives as they choose. It's what we do with every other disease . The only reason there is concern now is the risk that the NHS gets overwhelmed

well it is selfish to be against it, as vaccinating is our way out of this pandemic, out of these lockdowns

we need to act fast otherwise many businesses are going under, here in my country Zoo's are already struggling big time, they are now asking for donations from the people since they still need to feed their animals, and now they rely on donations more than ever as they are closed for a long time already

I read that there was also an attitude of ‘ if its Gods will’ but by that token you would never go to the GP for any ailment

But it isn't just the bame community , there's white anti vaccinators aswell .

But I'm still wondering why they say Covid is more likely to affect BAME people??. When all kinds of people have been dying from Covid from various backgrounds.

And anyone refusing to take the vaccine is just putting not only themselves but others at risk and it's illogical and silly to refuse it .

I think it's still not thoroughly established if it's due to a genetic thing, or lifestyles.

White people just bump gums about being against it, most people will bypass Gregg's for a day to get the jab after slavering a load of ****e about not taking it.

Ita different though with the BAME, especially the B. I hope its cause of Beliefs.

I'm willing to discuss this further with you, because if its fear and mistrust then that out of order.

With all due respect there is a big difference in saying ‘my body, my choice’, and what you originally said which was that the virus isn’t a threat to you

They’re just reasons why I don’t want the vaccine, they don’t have to link together
