Lucky them. But at this point, no-one in the UK is worse of because a long forgotten ancestor was a slave.

Our history with slavery is just as brutal. we used to own all the slave transport contracts, for one.

It's complicated really because, let's face it, every mining village/town in the UK was also built off the back of exploitation... and that's a hell of a lot of them.

However... in relative terms? Yes, ethnic minorities (as well as working class and even middle class white folx) absolutely are comparatively worse off because of the slave trade... as there are still plenty of wealthy white people in the UK who gained vast portions of their wealth through the slave trade. I wonder if you think "a few hundred years" is longer than it actually is? Like the era of slavery is "ancient" history? It's only a handful of generations. |

"We" weren't alive at the time, it was our ancestors.

We must acknowledge our past fully, not try to sweep it under the rug because it's unpleasant. It's certainly not the place of white people to tell others whether or not they should simply move on.
We as a country profited from the Slave Trade and the empire left the world in a worse state than it was before it was a thing. Acting annoyed because you can't handle the dark parts of your own history is just the height of immaturity. The arrogance of this country is a constant source of irritation for me, we're think we're perfect, beyond blame, but we're not. Our history is vile and telling people to get over it instead of accepting that, for many people, we were the bad guys is just gross. We can't look down on America and go 'This isn't America' because we helped the slave trade grow, it's as much a stain on our history as it is America's. |

Our history lessons don't really teach these subjects in depth. Ask most British people what they actually learned about the slave trade, and they will basically tell you that Wilberforce saved them all and little else.

Us and Portugal were the main movers of slaves, which means we went to Africa, either traded for, or rounded humans up, and then took them to America to sell and trade. If you think that's not taking part, then I don't know what to tell you. That's also the abridged version, which means I've omitted a lot of the details of what happened during those times.

It’s History...some of it was ugly and inhumane.. but it’s done and dusted. Let’s learn from it and move on.

No, you don't understand. History lessons need to be devoted to telling kids how awful the country they were born in used to be before living memory, and town mayors need to make big speeches to apologise!!!

...I agree that the past shouldn’t be erased and that it’s there for learning and understanding...with any historical figure, it’s important to know the person who I’d being tributes with things like statues etc... because that image/that likening means nothing ...anyways, specific to this article and thread...?....the report was obviously requested and written because of the substantial funding being given ...I don’t know what the local ethnic communities are but the thing with that would be to balance it and also give such funding to local ethnic youth projects and charities...because surely that would help define the progressions from unpleasants of the past...
