Default Why are celebs and sports people, people that people are expected to look up to.

I've never understood that.

Because sports achievements are admirable?

It's a shame the term celebrity has been watered down by reality tv halfwits, celebrity used to mean "celebration of talent", and being a great sportsperson is certainly a talent worth celebrating.

Yeah..but we do have folk like oscar Pistorius, mike Tyson, tiger woods and a ton lot more to even that out...

So being top of a sport dont make you a saint, or a guaranteed voice for righteousness.

And nor should it...it patronises people.

And they crapped on their own reputations. Their stupid behaviours don't affect their achievements.

No it doesn't, but these people achieved all of that thanks to their dedication, hard work and passion for what they do. And that's what is motivating to achieve big things. I think it's a good and nice message to put out there.

I'm a rugby player, and younger I looked up to those men winning and training and doing all sorts of things to achieve what they wanted. It was a source of motivation.
And then as I was growing up, I realized a lot of people were left out like scientists for instance.
Not many of them are really well-known (apart from the obvious ones like Einstein, Marie Curie, Stephen Hawking etc) and I think that's a shame because working in science can lead to so many great achievements, requiring a lot of dedication, hard work and a passion for doing something good for humanity. Young kids can look up to people like that!

I wish we had more scientists in the spotlight rather than Z-list celebs tbh

I admire people with actual achievements, not for being able to run fast or kick a ball well. I'm just really not interested . I do find it individually impressive when someone is in clearly peak physical condition but in a sort of "good for you" way ... it literally does nothing for the world. In general, I don't think people are "admirable". Actions are admirable. Which is where it gets complicated because we're all human and, thus, people are capable of engaging in admirable activities whilst also being trash at the weekend, etc.

At the end of the day, people are people and plopping anyone on a pedestal is never a particularly good idea.
