Default Should the UK Bailout Eurostar?

The UK Goverment sold their shares in Eurostar back in 2015.

The French Company now wants both British and French Governments to support a bailout.

Thoughts.

If we don’t have any ownership then we shouldn’t pay to bail them out.

A pretty simple answer no?

if an airline in the States is in trouble do we bail them out just because they use UK airports..

Yes but the service that Eurostar provide to the UK is very important. There would be a big impact to the UK if they were to go bust.

I understand, but other airlines can fill the void and meet demand if Virgin was to go bust.

Are we just supposed to have an extended period of time (possible years) of no Eurostar trains running?

A UK bailout should be the very last resort, but if needed i think we are going to have to.

the government will be wanting to keep travel between england and france to a minimum, so they have no reason to bail them out. People can do what i did for years - use the ferry

Depends.

1) If the cost to the UK (trade transport etc.) would be more than the cost of the bailout then obviously yes, because it makes economic sense.

2) If they're struggling because of the impact of Covid then yes because it's the right thing to do.

3) If they're struggling for NON covid related reasons (e.g. simple bad management or unsustainable practices), and the cost of the bailout would be more than the cost of not bailing out, then no.
