Default White Irish earn 41% more than white British

White Irish people in the UK earn “notably more” that the average British white person, a report on the ethnicity pay gap in the UK has found.

The report, by the Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities, found that the gap between the mean hourly earnings of all ethnic groups, and the white British, was 2.3 per cent, with the ethnic groups, on average, earning less.

But for Chinese, Indian and white Irish people, average earnings exceed those of the white British, with the Irish being the best paid of all.

Research showed the white Irish earning 41 per cent more than the white British. The equivalent figures for the Chinese and Indian populations were 23 per cent and 15 per cent, respectively.

Those groups earning less than the white British included the Pakistani and mixed white/black African communities, who earn 15 per cent less.

The report found that while white Irish scored very well in terms of educational attainment, Irish Traveller children were at the bottom of the range, along with children from the white Gypsy and Roma communities.

‘Outstanding’ success
The report said that special support was required for people from black Caribbean, mixed white and black Caribbean, Traveller of Irish heritage, Gypsy and Roma, Pakistani boys from low socio-economic backgrounds, and lower socio-economic status white British young people.

“Nevertheless, the level of success experienced by many ethnic minorities
in the UK is outstanding and should be recognised as such,” the report said.

Does this not just mean there’s a bigger disparity between what white Irish people earn compared to POC Irish people?

Not really something to be proud of?

the comparison was white Irish v white British, the percentage of Irish POC in the UK would be incredibly small

I don't think you have ever been to Ireland?

Ethnic groups
Irish 82.2%, Irish travellers 0.7%, other white 9.5%, Asian 2.1%, black 1.4%, other 1.5%, unspecified 2.6% (2016 est.)[20]#

Ireland contains several immigrant communities, especially in Dublin. The most common foreign nationalities include Polish, British, Lithuanian and Latvian.

Probably skewed by all the cowboy construction workers who work long hours and cash in.

Most of the companies they work for are irish or Scottish owned. So it makes sense to me that they would be.

I call them cowboys because there work is most likely shoddy, not necessarily because they a evading tax.

If their work is shoddy they won’t get repeat work, you really should try and apply some critical thinking, I find it very helpful in life

I think we have moved in as well from the Irish just being employed in the building trade, it is 2021 after all, nothing wrong with the building trade but you find now it’s mainly Eastern European who make up the bulk of employees but you carry on with your ignorant stereotypical view of Irish people

Construction industry is big money. The amount of Irish working long hours in this industry is why they get paid more on average. I’m sure of it.

It could be said that this is just another statistic thats been highlighted, just so it further divides people who dont want to be highlighted in this way.

I think there’s a relatively simple explanation here. Ireland is just a hop across the sea, first gen Irish people come over because they have a decent job already lined up here or qualifications that mean their employment prospects are good here. Irish people who do not have good employment prospects probably aren’t going to move over to work in a supermarket? And those who don’t find that their employment prospects are any better here more than likely end up moving home.

That’s assuming it’s just first gen we’re talking about. Otherwise I get to gloat too because both me and my wife have Irish in us (both of my wife’s maternal grandparents are full blooded Irish which I guess makes her mum full Irish too although she was born in Engerland. I’m 4th gen on my dad’s side - but that still counts right?)

I think the point being made is about education, the Chinese and Indians do better as well, (although I expect User will put that down to cornershop ownership and takeaways )

To be fair, all of the "pay gaps" are caused by the people working different jobs and/or different hours
