Default Paris Saint-Germain new manager Christophe Galtier, now confirmed

PSG hope to hire Christophe Galtier 'within the next week' according to reports
The Nice boss became the favourite after Zinedine Zidane bowed out of the race
The ex-Real Madrid boss is reportedly eyeing the France job after the World Cup
Galtier won Ligue 1 with Lille in 2020-21 and led Nice to fifth spot last campaign

Paris Saint-Germain reportedly aim to hire Christophe Galtier as head coach within the next week after Zinedine Zidane dropped out of the running.

The 55-year-old Frenchman marshalled Nice to a fifth place finish in Ligue 1 last campaign and would take over the PSG role from Mauricio Pochettino, who was sacked by the French giants earlier this month.

Galtier's top achievement as manager was leading Lille to the Ligue 1 title in 2020-21, the only time PSG failed to win the division during the last five seasons.

Zidane reportedly flew to Qatar to hold talks with the Parc des Princes chiefs in early June to discuss a potential deal with the club.

However, the former Real Madrid boss has dropped out of the running in the hope of succeeding Didier Deschamps as France manager after the 2022 World Cup, according to The Athletic.

The outlet claimed that PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi is eager to agree a compensation package with Nice in a bid to poach Galtier in next few days.

His appointment would provide a reunion with new PSG football advisor Luis Campos, who worked alongside Galtier at Lille between 2017 and 2020.

PSG and Lille are reportedly holding talks as well over a potential deal for Portuguese midfielder Renato Sanches, who played a pivotal role during Galtier's Ligue 1 title charge in 2020-21.

Having persuaded Kylian Mbappe to renew his PSG contract in May, the domestic champions are now plotting a squad overhaul this summer, eager to support their French star with a glut of new additions.

The club are reportedly eyeing swoops for Inter defender Milan Skriniar, Porto midfielder Vitinha and Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior, who was asked not to renew his contract with the European champions by PSG on Sunday.

Paris Saint-Germain denied reports on Monday that Nice coach Christophe Galtier will be named the Parisian club’s new coach.

Newspaper L’Equipe and radio station FranceInfo claimed the Frenchman had agreed to replace Mauricio Pochettino at Parc de Princes.

A source close to the club told AFP later that “numerous discussions are underway", despite the reports.

Argentinian Pochettino, who was appointed in January last year and led the club to the Ligue 1 title in the season that just ended, has another 12 months remaining on his contract.

French newspapers have reported however that Pochettino and the club have come to an agreement that would see the Argentine leave the French capital.

Galtier’s current employers were unavailable for comment.

If he does make the move to Paris, Galtier would reunite with Louis Campos, PSG’s recently appointed football advisor.

Earlier this month, the French press linked former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane with the position, with PSG’s Qatari owners desperate to win the Champions League.

France World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe signed a new deal with the Parisians last month, choosing against joining the Spanish giants Real Madrid.

The new French top-flight season begins on the weekend of August 6-7.

A week before that, champions PSG will play French Cup winners Nantes in the Trophee des Champions, the traditional curtain-raiser to the French season, in Tel-Aviv, Israel.

Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly primed to announce Christophe Galtier as their new manager next week.

The former Lille and Nice manager left his Aiglons post at the end of last month after just one season in charge, during which he led the club back into Europe.

Galtier steered Nice to a fifth-placed finish in the 2021-22 Ligue 1 season, as well as reaching the final of the Coupe de France, which his side lost to Nantes.

However, Les Aiglons' push for Champions League football did not bear fruit, with Nice winning just six of their final 13 matches to finish fifth and settle for Europa Conference League football.

Galtier's relationship with the Nice board allegedly soured towards the end of the campaign, and director Julien Fournier opened the door for PSG to make their move.

PSG are now understood to have agreed an £8.6m deal to buy Galtier out of his Nice contract, and Les Aiglons have already replaced the 55-year-old with Lucien Favre.

According to French outlet L'Equipe -via Marca - PSG are expected to unveil Galtier as their new manager next week once the formalities of Mauricio Pochettino's sacking are made official.

Pochettino will be departing the Parc des Princes after just one-and-a-half seasons in charge, during which he won the Ligue 1 title, the Coupe de France and the Trophee des Champions.

However, the 50-year-old failed to lead PSG to Champions League glory, as Les Parisiens lost to Manchester City in the 2020-21 semi-finals before capitulating at the hands of Real Madrid in the last-16 this year.

PSG are thought to have made the decision to sack Pochettino a while ago, but the Argentine's departure from the club is yet to be confirmed as he negotiates a severance package with the French champions.

PSG reportedly offered Galtier a two-year deal with the option of an additional 12 months, but the publication adds that he will instead now sign a straight contract until 2024.

Galtier may be ready to face the media for the first time as PSG manager on Tuesday, and he arrives having won one Ligue 1 title and one Coupe de la Ligue crown as a coach so far.

Meanwhile, Pochettino leaves PSG after winning 56, drawing 13 and losing 15 of his 84 games in charge of the French club, and he only had 12 months remaining on his contract with Les Parisiens.

The new PSG manager isn’t the most well-known outside of France, but his achievements are no less impressive. And soon, people will know his name.

News broke on Monday that Christophe Galtier, former Nice coach, will take over for Mauricio Pochettino as head coach of Paris Saint-Germain. The 55-year-old has agreed to a two-year contract with the club and has his work cut out for him with Neymar and Kylian Mbappé to subjugate. Though he’s not particularly well-known outside of his native France, Galtier has an impressive resume.

Galtier was born in Marseille, France and played soccer for his hometown club as well as Lille, Toulouse, Angers, Nimes, Monza, and Liaoning, from 1985-1999. After retiring as a player without any trophies, Galtier began coaching. He started his coaching career with Marseille as assistant coach immediately.

After assistant coaching for a while, he became the head coach at Saint-Etienne in 2009. He stayed there for almost eight years, bringing the team to the Coupe de la Ligue title in 2013. He finally left the club in 2017 to take over at Lille in the middle of a relegation battle.

Though his playing style was not the most popular, Galtier managed to keep Lille safe and the team qualified for the Champions League in his first season with them, finishing second overall. Despite this, his success in the Champions League has been less than great, with five losses, one tie, and no wins in six appearances. He can say that he led Lille to the Ligue 1 title in the 2020-21 season, though, when they finished one point ahead of Thomas Tuchel’s PSG.

After his most successful season with Lille, Galtier resigned and took over as manager for Nice, taking them from ninth place to fifth place. They lost to Nantes in the French Cup Final.

Though he doesn’t yet have the experience of working with big stars, Galtier has proven he knows how to help a team improve. PSG will be looking to win their first European title since 1996, and Galtier is the man tasked with getting them there.

“Christophe is for me, one of the best coaches I’ve had,” said Lille player José Fonte. “He deserves the success that he’s having. I’m sure that he will continue to be successful because of his way of managing.”

“He knows how to get the best out of a player. Then, as a coach, we know exactly what we have to do on the field, which is fantastic. We know how to defend, we know how to attack. And once you have this type of organization, you are very close to being successful.”
