Default Sunak in British Richest list

Chancellor Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty have made the Sunday Times Rich List of the UK's wealthiest 250 people for the first time.

Their joint £730m fortune ranks them at 222 of the paper's annual list.

Recently, Ms Murty's tax affairs came under scrutiny after it was revealed she had "non-dom" status - meaning she did not pay UK tax on overseas income.

Ms Murty, the daughter of an Indian IT billionaire, later agreed to pay UK taxes on all her earnings.

Her 0.9% stake in her father Narayana Murty's IT company Infosys, estimated to be worth around £690m, earned her £11.6m in dividend income last year.

It is estimated her use of the status could have saved her £20m in taxes.

Mr Sunak was later cleared of breaching the ministerial code after referring himself to Prime Minister Boris Johnson's standards adviser to check if he had properly declared all his interests.

It's up to them how rich they are. But when they decide on the budget and things are so expensive how are people that rich supposed to ever understand the poor lot of us

Good point. You can't understand the man unless you've walked in his shoes.

Exactly, and this is showing badly at the moment. Cost of living is increasing right now, families are struggling right now, they say things like "Don't worry! We're going to reduce income tax in 2024". Utterly meaningless.

Or saying things like "these great measures will save families £120 a year " when they're down £100 a month on petrol alone, easily £250/month+ on fuel/utilities/food cost increases.

It's like seeing someone stood outside their house that's burning down, handing them a supersoaker and two water balloons while saying "here, this'll help old chap..."

It's just scary how clueless they are though. We are going into a very bad winter I think. Maybe people dying of starvation, dying from the cold particularly older people, and the largest rates of homelessness there ever has been. If it turns out to be a very cold winter the majority of us are screwed. But the rich are rich and the poor are poor. We are back to Dickensian days

Actual starvation seems unlikely although I think malnutrition will be rife (people living on basic bulk carbs for too long, not getting enough nutrients/protein etc.) but sadly I think you're right about heating next winter, especially elderly people.

He needs to be removed tbqfh, almost-billionaires should not be eligible to be chancellor of the exchequer. It's a massive conflict of interests.

it's a huge public perception problem, particularly during times of financial crisis. We cant have someone that is immune from those problems setting the financial targets for the country. There could well be conflict of interest, but thats the least of it

Realistically that's unsolvable; even on the basic MP salary (nearly £85000) politicians aren't quite going to understand the situation for most families, especially as realistically most are going to be a dual-income home and have other interests/investments, so income well into 6 figures.

With Tories it's amplified as a lot of them are at least "low-millionaires"...

...however, there's a huge difference between being that sort of well-off, and the implications once you're into the several-hundred-million category. They are basically billionaires in US dollars. It's not just his lack of understanding that's an issue, it's the level of influence he has over their own wealth with even minor tweaks.

Why do you think they paid that several-million-pound tax in order for him to stay in the job? It's not just because he likes his job. It's because in the long run, they think that "investment" will pay off more by having him there pulling strings for the mega-rich. It's dodgy as ****.
