Default A terrible thing.

My friends son went missing abroad 2 years ago and there's never been so much of a trace of him since.

His bank accounts remain unaccessed to this day and he was last seen getting into a woman's car. She's never been traced either.

Is he unlikely to still be alive or would you say he'd met with foul play. He was 35 when he went missing.

That’s so sad on a few levels ..

The untouched bank accounts is alarming

He could have just wanted to go completely off grid and start a new life Kate. Did he have life troubles here? It sounds bleak but there is always a chance he is somewhere living his best life and just wanted a clean break.

Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that.
That does sound worrying
I have no idea, I really hope he's found safe and well.

He's unlikely to still be alive if his bank accounts have been untouched, but whether that is foul play or an accident will unfortunately never be known, unless he reappears in whatever state he might now still be in.

Mmmm
Even if you wanted a fresh start you would want a back up plan or safety net .

Leaving bank accounts untouched whilst going missing will result in the accounts being suspended.

Depends on if he any money in there in the first place.

I have some accounts I have left untouched for years lol.

He could have opened another account that no-one knows about - or in someone elses name. He could have legally changed his name. I suppose it depends how much he want to "disappear"

Unless he is no longer alive (which I agree is the more likely situation) but people can disappear if they want to enough.

Yeah, anything is possible. Not very likely though. I presume a forensic look at his credit/banking information would show pretty quickly if any of the other stuff was a possibility. You can't just change your name and get a new set of credit information.

Well there are really only two possibilities... one is that something happened to him, the other is that he does not WANT to be found, which would be the only explanation for going completely off-grid. It's not entirely unheard of but I'd say unless there was some previous indication that this was something he would do then it does unfortunately seem less likely. More plausible if he'd previously expressed a desire for that sort of existence.

It's really hard when no closure is available, sadly it happens a lot. A past colleague of mine's nephew has been "missing presumed dead" after jumping from a bridge into a river. Witnesses on the bridge saw him jump, it was a large drop and the water was freezing (December weather) however despite 999 being called straight away, a body was never found. That was about 5 years ago. As I say logically there's no real chance he somehow survived and has been in hiding for years, but so hard for the family to move on when they had to have a funeral with an empty coffin.

The lad who's disappeared was doing up a house he'd bought to live in. His plan was to have it as a holiday home. He was living in a caravan in the meantime. His car has never moved from outside the house in 2 years.

There was a couple of grand in the bank accounts which are now frozen.

Sniffer dogs found traces of both blood and drugs in the caravan.

Ahh honestly Kate with it being Eastern Europe and drugs involved it sounds like he may have fallen foul of some ... people ... in which case there's unlikely to ever be any trace of what happened.

Yes this is what I think too. It's devastating for his mum who also lost her husband to Cancer a year ago.

That reminds me of another person from your neck of the woods Kate, that went missing in America, in January and still hasn't been found. He's former Wigan and St Helens rugby league player, Bryn Hargreaves.

I agree with what Toy Soldier said.

Is your friend holding up hope for the fact that he might still be alive or is she despondent about it?

Very despondent Red. She's had to go on anxiety medication.

They discovered a dead man in a well in another country a while ago while looking for another missing person.

Bless her. After her husband dying like that this is probably the last thing she wanted (and every mother’s worst nightmare).

I’ve always kinda wondered what I would do if I was placed in that kind of taxing situation. Part of me would want to throw in the towel but the other part would want to stay strong and alive just in case s/he returned (which actually does happen from time to time).

The disturbing thing is even if his bank accounts were active, someone else could be the one using them. It's actually ashame they're not active .. as surely police could investigate that,as it's a crime to steal someone's identity.

But I agree yeah sadly I think it's unlikely he's still alive .
