Default Superstars set to shine at commonwealth games

Quote:
Four years on from the sun-kissed success of the Gold Coast, the Commonwealth Games prepares to pitch up in Birmingham this month amid a refreshed conviction of its place within the international sporting firmament.

No matter that in the period since the flame was snuffed out over the Carrara Stadium, a number of nations including Barbados and Jamaica have declared their intentions to remove the Queen as their respective head of state.

Crumbling political ties are yet to be reflected in the sporting side an organisation in which the Caribbean nations remain very much front and centre – and which comes to Birmingham very much in a position of renewed strength.

If those 12 glorious days on the Gold Coast taught us anything, it was to celebrate the superstars and also-rans in equal measure, and to champion the Commonwealth Games as an antidote to the corporate gigantism of so many other major sports events.

In that spirit, Birmingham will welcome the likes of Adam Peaty and Dina Asher-Smith alongside Olympic stars such as Jamaican sprint duo Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Elaine Thompson-Hera, who will jet straight over from the World Athletics Championships in Oregon to join the party.

On the other hand, it will play host to lawn bowlers from Norfolk Island, home of some descendants of the Mutiny on the Bounty, and two beach volleyball players from Tuvalu, a Pacific atoll whose entirety could fit within Birmingham’s city limits 10 times.

Stories of tortuous journeys and improbable preparations shape the Commonwealth Games just as much as the lung-bursting, record-breaking exploits of those who fly in first class with Olympic medals already hanging around their necks.

Who knew about Niue until its podgy super-heavyweight Star Tauasicaused a sensation by knocking out his Australian rival in the opening round of the boxing competition in Manchester in 2002?

Who knew weightlifters from Kiribati could dance until David Katoatau claimed an improbable first gold medal for his country in the final of the men’s 105kg event at the Glasgow Games in 2014?

These are all moments that deserve to sit alongside sepia-tinted memories of the ‘Miracle Mile’ between John Landy and Roger Bannister in Vancouver in 1954, or the audacious emergence of a 15-year-old swimmer called Ian Thorpe in Kuala Lumpur in 1998.

Birmingham will facilitate more of these contrasting memories, and while talk of medal tables may seem anathema to the friendly spirit that pervades these games, England will nevertheless be seeking to usurp Australia and reclaim top spot.

Weightlifter Emily Campbell will make her first major appearance in the UK since clinching a shock Olympic silver medal in Tokyo last year, while gymnast Claudia Fragapane returns to the Games for the first time since sweeping the board with four gold medals as a precocious teenager in Glasgow in 2014.

Northern Ireland hope Rhys McClenaghan can shrug off the selection controversy that almost cost him his chance to defend his men’s pommel title, and lawn bowler Alex ‘Tattie’ Marshall looks to underline his record as Scotland’s greatest performer at the Games.

The introduction of 3X3 basketball and T20 cricket will give it a new dimension, with the former in particular looking to capitalise on the surging popularity of the so-called ‘urban’ sports programme in Tokyo last year.

The Commonwealth Games has been derided for too long as an increasingly inconsequential relic of a bygone – and best forgotten – political age.

But seen solely as an opportunity to compete on a major multi-sport stage, it comes into its own. Its enduring stature is acknowledged in the fact that Asher-Smith and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce are squeezing it into their already hectic schedules.

It is why cricket lobbied so strongly for inclusion, and why netball returns to the programme as a sport transformed in this country since Helen Housby’s famous last-gasp goal to clinch a famous gold medal win over Australia four years ago.

It is why kids from wave-lapped Pacific atolls can harbour the audacious dream of one day competing alongside their heroes. For all those reasons, the Commonwealth Games – anachronistic, yes, and even faintly anarchic – should continue to be coveted.

Default Duran Duran, Black Sabbath to open commonwealth games

The 80s pop group will perform on the same bill as fellow local musician Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

Singer Simon Le Bon said he was "honoured" to play the homecoming gig.

Peaky Blinders director Steven Knight will executive produce the event, which will be broadcast live on the BBC.

Duran Duran formed in Birmingham in 1978 and went on to become leading figures of the new romantic scene with hits like Hungry Like the Wolf, Girls on Film and Rio.

After a brief hiatus in the mid-80s, they reunited and scored another worldwide hit with Ordinary World in 1993. They continue to tour and record, and recently headlined the BST festival in London's Hyde Park.

"The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games is a momentous event for the great city of Birmingham," said Le Bon in a statement. "And we in Duran Duran are honoured to be a part of it in our home town."

Also on the night, Grammy-winning guitarist Iommi and saxophonist Soweto Kinch will lead a dream sequence entitled Hear my Voice, based on the title track from 2020 film Trial of the Chicago Seven, re-imagined by Birmingham-born R&B vocalists Indigo Marshall and Gambimi.

Mezzo-soprano Samantha Oxborough, a graduate of The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, will also perform the national anthem with the CBSO.

Theatre producer Iqbal Khan said it has been "an unbelievable honour" to guide the artistic direction for the opening ceremony.

"Since setting out on this journey, I wanted to tell Birmingham's story and I wanted to tell it right - to show that there is a vivid and vibrant confidence about this place," said Khan, who worked alongside rapper Joshua 'RTKal' Holness on the ceremony's soundtrack

"It's the music of this city that truly gives it its voice, and this stunning line-up will connect with a global audience, as we celebrate the best of Birmingham creativity on an international stage."

The newly-refurbished 30,000 capacity Alexander Stadium will also host the closing party.

The games will be the first top flight multi-sport event hosted in the UK since the 2014 Glasgow games and before that the 2012 London Olympics.

Commonwealth Games Minister Nigel Huddleston said the upcoming ceremony was "the next blockbuster in our major year of sport and culture - the curtain-raiser for an incredible 11 days of sport".

"London 2012 brought spectacles of this kind to a whole new generation," he added. "Ten years on, this ceremony will connect a new, global audience and showcase the very best of Birmingham and the whole of the UK."

Quote:
This summer's Commonwealth Games are a huge opportunity for Para-sport to make a significant impact, former swimmer Ellie Simmonds has told BBC Sport.

The five-time Paralympic gold medallist retired from the pool last year but has been part of the organising committee for the Games.

Birmingham 2022 has the Commonwealth Games' biggest Para-sports programme, with 42 events across eight sports.

"More events show how powerful the Para-sport movement is," she said.

"It's so good for Para-sport, and for the events to be on a level playing field here shows it is as important as able-bodied sport.

"There will be some amazing Para-athletes competing and they deserve as much recognition as the non-disabled athletes.

"We have seen a massive momentum. Para-athletes are now seen as professional athletes and are inspiring the next generation."

After no spectators were able to attend last year's Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, the athletes in Birmingham will have plenty of support. Simmonds, who grew up in Aldridge, near Walsall, and will be part of the BBC team for the Games, knows how important that will be.

"It is so exciting for me to have a big sporting event in what is really my home city," she said.

"You can feel the buzz of the Games and we need a big sporting event like this in Britain after the couple of years we have had.

"For the athletes, it will be special to compete in front of a home crowd again. It's like an adrenaline rush."

Para-sport's road to Birmingham
Events for athletes with a disability were first included on the programme for the 1994 Games in Victoria, where exhibition events in athletics and lawn bowls were held.

But the 2002 Games in Manchester marked a huge step forward, with Para-athletes fully integrated into their national teams, making them the first fully inclusive international multi-sport Games.

A total of 20 countries sent both male and female elite Para-athletes to complete in 10 events in five different sports - athletics, lawn bowls, swimming, table tennis and weightlifting - and medals counted as part of the overall team total, a move that has continued.

Just over a year after having her leg amputated following a scooter crash, the star of the show was South African Natalie du Toit.

The then 18-year-old won both the multi-disability 50m and 100m freestyle and made history by qualifying for the non-disabled 800m freestyle final.

Since then, the programme has grown at each Games and after 38 events on the Gold Coast four years ago, Birmingham has seen further growth, with wheelchair basketball 3x3 joining athletics, cycling, powerlifting, swimming, table tennis, triathlon and lawn bowls on the programme.

What are the sports and events to watch?
Wheelchair basketball is set to be one of the most exciting events, with the fast-paced matches played on the former site of the city's wholesale markets in Smithfield from 29 July to 2 August.

Six teams will compete in each event. England, South Africa, Australia and Canada have both men's and women's teams while Northern Ireland and Malaysia men and Scotland and Kenya women complete the line-up.

England will be among the favourites for both golds, with the women's team featuring world silver medallists Amy Conroy, Charlotte Moore and Joy Haizelden, along with Jade Atkin.

Two-time Paralympic bronze medallist Lee Manning brings experience to the men's team alongside youngsters Tyler Baines, Charlie McIntyre and Abderrahim Taghrest.

As the only sport that is not part of the Paralympic Games programme, lawn bowls has a special place at the Commonwealths.

Australia won two gold medals on home soil last time. This time, three golds are up for grabs in the men's pairs and women's pairs for athletes with physical impairments and an event for visually impaired athletes.

Visually impaired athletes will be making their Games debut in the triathlon programme after the sport first appeared in Australia four years ago.

Who are the athletes to watch?
There are plenty of world-class competitors bidding to add Commonwealth gold to their Paralympic medal haul.

Seven-time Paralympic champion Hannah Cockroft will be making her Commonwealth debut in the T33/34 100m, where she goes up against England team-mate Kare Adenegan.

Cockroft won 100m and 800m golds in front of no spectators in Tokyo last summer. She will relish home support in the Alexander Stadium when she goes for gold on 2 August, three days after her 30th birthday.

On the same day, double Paralympic gold medallist Sophie Hahn will be bidding to retain her title in the T37/38 100m. Unbeaten over the distance in major championship finals since 2014, the 25-year-old was victorious on the Gold Coast four years ago.

And the men's F42-44/F61-64 discus on 3 August could see a showdown between GB team-mates Dan Greaves and Aled Sion Davies.

England's Greaves is a discus specialist and won his sixth Paralympic medal from six Games in Tokyo, as well as Commonwealth gold in Glasgow in 2014.

His Welsh rival has been concentrating on the shot, as discus is not a Paralympic event in his category, but after switching focus this year for the Commonwealths has made huge strides and the pair have both thrown 56m bests this season.

In the velodrome, Scotland's Neil Fachie will be looking to win double gold for the third straight Commonwealth Games after success in Glasgow in 2014 and Australia four years ago.

Fachie and pilot Lewis Stewart go in the kilo and sprint races at the Lee Valley VeloPark on 29 and 31 July and two more golds could see him become the most successful Scottish athlete at the Games.

There will also be a chance for sprinter Libby Clegg to show what she can do on a bike after switching sports post-Tokyo.

At the Sandwell Aquatics Centre, six-time Paralympic champion swimmer Bethany Firth will go for Northern Ireland in the only major event she has not won gold in, fresh from winning five golds at the recent World Championships in Madeira.

England's Maisie Summers-Newton will be favourite in the SB6 100m breaststroke on 1 August - an event where she is Paralympic and world champion. Her team-mate Alice Tai, the winner of two golds four years ago, will be in action in two events just months after having her right leg amputated below the knee.

Tai, who competes in the S8 category, will compete against less-impaired athletes in the S9 100m freestyle on 29 July but her stronger event will be the S8 100m backstroke two days later.

BBC's commonwealth games anthem

-------------------------------------------
https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/royals...ames--27572703

Quote:
The 2022 Commonwealth Games are quickly approaching and fans of the Royal Family are eager to find out which royals could be in attendance at the games.

The Royal Family are lovers of sport, and the Commonwealth Games is one of the highlights of the year on their calendar.

This year's tournament runs from July 28 to August 8 and traditionally, members of the Firm attend a number of events throughout the games.

This year, even more royals are expected to attend than usual because the games are being hosted on home ground in Birmingham, returning to the UK for the first time since the 2014 games in Glasgow.

Here's everything you need to know about which royals will be attending, when they'll make an appearance and whether the Queen is set to go.

Earlier this month the Palace confirmed that the Queen will not be attending any of the events at the Commonwealth Games this year.

The news came after the Monarch had already pulled out from a number of engagements this year due to mobility issues.

In May, she did not attend the State Opening of Parliament and in June she made a last-minute decision to not attend the Service of Thanksgiving for her Platinum Jubilee.

The Palace have previously stated that Her Majesty has been experiencing "episodic mobility problems".

She appeared to be in better health towards the end of last month, when she made an unexpected appearance in Scotland as she travelled to Edinburgh for Holyrood week celebrations.

However, it looks as though she may be experiencing more mobility issues as she sits out of the Commonwealth Games.

Prince Charles, who will be accompanied by his wife Camilla Parker Bowles, will be filling in for the Queen during the Commonwealth Games.

A statement from the Palace confirmed: "The Prince of Wales accompanied by The Duchess of Cornwall will represent The Queen at the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games."

Prince Charles will give a speech during the opening ceremony and he will also read The Queen’s message for the Commonwealth Games.

As well as Charles and Camilla, several other members of the Royal Family will also be in attendance of various events during the Commonwealth Games.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, The Earl and Countess of Wessex, The Princess Royal and The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester will all be making appearances.

The Earl and Countess of Wessex will both be at the opening ceremony and they'll also be attending a series of fixtures on a number of days throughout the games.

Do you mean the second City.

Personally as someone that was born in Birmingham, I'm proud to see that we're finally gonna get some good publicity for a change.

Don't forget as a City we have a place that's nicknamed Stab City, two no go zone areas, two **** Football teams and a dreadful Rugby Union team.

Basically it's about time that we don't suck at something.

am so excited for tonight's ceremony show

also Geraint Thomas one of Wales's flag bearers, coming straight over from Paris and his 3rd place in the Tour de France to compete in these games for his own country

@Parmnion, @LT Scotland's flag bearers are Micky Yule (para-powerlifter) and Kirsty Gilmour (badminton player)
