Professor Jason Leitch has admitted it might have been a mistake to close
schools during the Covid pandemic.

Scotland’s national clinical director said different decisions might have been
made if the full impact of lockdown had been known.

Professor Leitch, who fronted the Covid campaign, added that he was drafted
in for Scottish Government TV briefings [B]over fears that only half the nation
liked First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

His comments appear to undermine the hardline tactics adopted by the
Scottish and UK governments, which caused huge disruption to education,
the NHS, businesses and society for two years.

A spokesman for children’s rights group UFTScotland said: ‘Now we are
seeing an acknowledgement that home schooling was a terrible political
decision that impacted a generation.

‘We knew from the data at the time that Covid was affecting older people and
was not an issue for younger people and the harm of closing schools was
never considered. Everyone lost their mind and children were thrown under a
bus. Now Professor Leitch is admitting children were not being educated.’

Shutting everything during lock down was a mistake as many people said at
the time. You don't have to be a genius to work out that people who are kept
away from other people, schools, doctors, dentists and hospitals will suffer,
and still are. There was also no point in wearing masks as several studies
have shown.

I agree on the NHS shutdown - it was a disaster, service should never have been closed or restricted. It's proving impossible to catch up.

Schools ... ? There's VERY LITTLE evidence of poorer education outcomes for kids who were out of school for lockdown tbh. Bigger effect on kids in exam years, but I don't think there's any real evidence of the education of primary school-aged kids being particularly "damaged" at all. Academically minded kids caught up quicker, less academically minded kids were never going to be achieving high grades anyway and - in fact - many discovered other areas of interest/talents during that time because they weren't being shoehorned into activities that aren't right for them.

There is evidence many kids suffered from mental health isdues and there have been suicides, school isn’t all about education, kids missed out on socialising and pre schoolers missed more opportunities than most

An international report by the UN agency found two years of restrictions have led to

at least half the country wanted to be locked down. It was parents that were shouting loudly to close schools, or is that being conveniently forgotten

SIR – I read with horror that the Covid inquiry has already cost £114 million
(report, March 18), with 150 lawyers involved, and could take up to seven
years to complete.

None of this will bring back my husband or the many others who died. The
inquiry is at risk of being a huge waste of time and money – from which
nothing is learned.

I mean the stats there are a little misleading. Yes there are issues of kids falling through the cracks post-Covid, you can't really deny that, but also there are people and families who simply discovered that home-schooling works better for them and always would have, they just had never tried it. There are also multiple reasons for decline in mental health across all age groups including children, no real evidence that most of those wouldn't have the same issues if schools had stayed open.

There are definitely kids who thrive in school but it's not all.
