A submersible used to take tourists to view the wreck of the Titanic has gone missing in the Atlantic Ocean, sparking a search and rescue mission.

The Boston Coastguard told the BBC an operation to find the submersible was under way on Monday.

It is not clear how many people, if any, were on board at the time it went missing.

Small submersibles occasionally take paying tourists to view the wreck of the Titanic.

The famous shipwreck sits 3,800m (12,500ft) down at the bottom of the Atlantic. It is about 600km (370 miles) off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

The passenger liner, which was the largest ship of its time, hit an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York in 1912. Of the 2,200 passengers and crew onboard, more than 1,500 died.

The Titanic has been extensively explored since the wreck was discovered in 1985.

Now, OceanGate is giving a small group of paying tourists the opportunity to view the Titanic during a 10-day mission, including eight days at sea, according to a tourist brochure. Guests pay $250,000 to take a five-crew submersible, called the "Titan," down about 2.5 miles to the wreckage on the ocean floor.

[The dives can last up to 10 hours each,
with participants spending a total of 10 days
at sea onboard a larger ship.]

Whooooa there ..

£200,000 for each person taking the trip !!

:::::

A submersible craft used to take people to see the wreck of the Titanic has gone missing in the Atlantic Ocean with its crew on board, sparking a major search and rescue operation.
Tour firm OceanGate, which runs $250,000-a-seat expeditions to the wreck, said it was exploring all options to get the crew back safely.
It said government agencies and deep sea firms were helping the operation.
The Titanic sank in 1912 and lies some 3,800m (12,500ft) beneath the waves.
The missing craft is believed to be OceanGate's Titan submersible, a truck-sized sub that holds five people and usually dives with a four-day supply of oxygen.
It is not known when contact with the craft was lost.
"Our entire focus is on the crewmembers in the submersible and their families," OceanGate said in a statement.

It's crazy to think that they are under the ocean right now wondering if anyone is coming to rescue them.

They are essentially buried alive.

I’m stunned that they paid so much to see the wreck ..

I’m a history junkie but I wouldn’t pay more then £30 to go down to see it ..

I have to say it sends shivers down my spine when I see images of the Titanic at the bottom of the Ocean…it’s just haunting.
These trips have been going on for sometime…I would say many wealthy people have had the experience…but it clearly comes with risk.
People with this kind of money seem to thrive on this sort of thing…I find it strangely morbid…but when you have no doubt afforded everything money can buy they just want to push the boundaries even more.
All pretty tragic though….
