Default Death penalty for child rape goes into effect FLORIDA

TALLAHASSEE — A new law that could lead to imposing the death penalty on
people who rape children under age 12 will take effect Sunday, along with other
laws passed during the 2023 legislative session.

During a May 1 bill-signing event in Brevard County, Gov. Ron DeSantis said
the measure is “for the protection of children.”

“Unfortunately, in our society, we have very heinous sex crimes that are
committed against children under the age of 12 years old,” DeSantis said.
“These are really the worst of the worst. The perpetrators of these crimes are
often serial offenders.”

Judges would have the discretion to impose the death penalty or sentence
defendants to life in prison. If fewer than eight jurors recommend death,
judges would have to impose life sentences.

it seems to be a common theme at the moment amongst politicians. Become more and more extreme until your extreme enough to be popular

I don't find this that extreme it's one of the few cases where I think it's almost justifiable, though I am against the death sentence in general. Either that or life (meaning life) in prosion, no possibility of release.

Re-offending rates are sky high with child molestation. The risk of them harming another child given the opportunity are huge.

I don't agree with it in the sense of a punishment but (in short) I'd rather they were dead than released.

I'd be just as happy with them all being put on a (heavily guarded by sea) island tbf, they can even have houses, shops, "normal" lives as far as I'm concerned after serving a sentence, they can live there until old age... ... ... just surrounded by only adults, and never allowed to leave.

I'd say it's several orders of magnitude less extreme than raping a child.

To be clear I'd never advocate it for general sexual offenses or even other "lesser" (though that seems an odd term to use here) offenses against children. I'm not talking about people who have groomed or abused teenagers. I'm talking people who have committed violent sexual crimes against young children.

My preference would be locked up for life as I said but if given a choice between ever releasing someone who had committed that crime, or having them put to death... yeah I'd flick the switch.

The right opinion. The state should not be involved in the premeditated murder of it's citizens. it's fcuking barbaric.

Revenge is not justice.

And again, revenge is not justice. I know it's difficult with emotive examples like child abuse, but the state should not be murdering citizens under any circumstance.

Revenge is not justice.
So what in your opinion is justice for the rape of a child?

You've explained what isn't justice. But what do you believe is?

Whatever the sentence is for that crime. If you want to look at harsher sentencing for that crime, then I have no problem with that at all, even if it's a remainder of life sentence. Just not retaliatory murder.

So, a roof over their heads and free meal's without having to do a days work, all at the taxpayers expense?

Maybe those taxes could be more helpful in other areas?

What about if we have a mass shooting, and a person shoots up a nursery, murdering over 10 pre-schoolers?

What about if a serial rapist targets an old peoples home, and manages to SA 6 of them in one night?

This is what I mean about revenge. What you're looking at is not what justice is, but about the goodies you think he's getting for free.

I'd kill myself at the first opportunity if I had to spend the rest of my life in protected/solitary confinement because of the severity of my crime.

Justice is losing their freedoms, committing violence towards that person is revenge.

Taxpayers are happy to fund this corrupt Island providing it's capital city for the dodgiest people around to launder their money in, so if you want to talk about justice with regards to taxation, I'm there, my brother, but lets not pretend that saving 50 grand a year for tax payers is the real motivation.

So you don't believe that taking away somebody's freedom and incarcerating them is revenge? Even you said you wouldn't be able to carry on with that outcome. Isn't justice for a crime a sort of revenge?

A minute ago you painted it out to be a holiday camp, and now it's revenge?

Society operates on a crime and punishment system, which I agree with. When you go beyond taking away freedom to inflict physical pain/death on the perps, then the holder of the laws is no better than those that commit crimes.
