A German brand owns the name
and has Woolworth stores doing well in Germany [Once loved for its pick 'n' mix sweets and bargain prices, Woolworths stores could return to the UK. In 2009 when its British shops closed after the financial crisis, the brand in Germany, where it is known as Woolworth, was saved by HH Holding. Current HH Holding chief Roman Heini says the UK is on his "bucket list" of destinations as he seeks to expand internationally. It comes as Wilko, which filled the gap left by Woolworths, collapsed in 2023. Mr Heini - who has worked in executive positions in both Aldi and Lidl and has been Woolworth chief executive since 2020 - told trade magazine Retail Week that despite the challenges of a cost-of-living crisis he had the opportunity to "make Woolworth great again". Affectionately known as "Woolies", if the brand were to return to UK High Streets it is unclear how it would be spelt. Woolworth Germany told the BBC: "The brand name 'Woolworth' (without the 's') is owned by us throughout Europe. Should we ever plan to return to the UK, we would scrutinise the naming rights to minimise the risk of confusion. A transfer of rights could help if necessary."] https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-68068503 |

It'll just be another B&M Bargains/Home Bargains type place full of mostly junk... not like the great Woolworths of the 90's .

…German’s coming over here and taking our great Woolworths of the 90’s…actually pick and mix were never great, I was always OCD about people having touched them and germs etc…

woolworth had it's day, that's why it went bust. There are loads of places online that do pick and mix etc if that's what people want. They don't need a woolworth for that

We need to see they have lower prices like a Aldi. In the German stores. Not food of course. Last edited by arista; 24-01-2024 at 03:43 PM. |

Remembering Kerry

The name may return.
However I doubt they can ever be the great store system they were. As a child, Woolworths was a must visit for me. I think it was a tragedy of business it was allowed to go under. |
