Default Labour Party to bring the Railway back into Public Ownership in 5 years time.

They will allow
some in private ownership.

This means they must stay in power
which stinks.

To be announced today
Louise Hayes, Shadow Transport Secretary.

Was debated on Newsnight BBC2HD.

Yes, 5years and over that.

Which means if
the general election after the first 5years
we change power.

This plan can be stopped

I don't understand.

They are going to do this over the next 5 years.
There's no word of 6 to 10 years at all

Government's can have 5 YEARS in power before elections.
So if they're going to do it over 5 years.
It would all be done by the next election anyhow.

I think they are and I hope it IS in the manifesto.
It's a popular measure with the public overall.

This is a policy I myself can certainly be eager to see done.

Well privatisation hasn't done much to change that has it

It seems the only thing that's improved is the food available.

It doesn't have to go back to how things were.
Obviously I wasn't around then.
However my Father used the train a lot as he could catch up with work material on it
He found it reliable no matter where he was travelling to.

He moaned a plenty after privatisation as to both costs and reliability.

It's actually a policy more supported by some margin by rail users now.
So Id like to see it given a chance

Privatisation was done before I was born on things or when I just was.
Researching by my own means and looking back.
I'd have seen privatisation of Rail, Water and Energy as one of the biggest cons ever.

why does everything take so long, I am sure they could do it in 3 years for instance?

It is estimated

That I understand
due to Contracts already signed

Labour will wait for each one to end
then take it over.

This means never spending more money
on purchasing from a company

Bringing it back to public ownership doesn't necessarily mean it has to go back to "the way it was" - at the very least, the "major" routes spanning the country to and from London should not be privately operated. Making them reliable and accessible is a huge economic positive.

They also need to get their heads out of the past and forget about the idea that "faster routes to London" is the key -- shaving an hour or two off a journey, for people who need to travel to and from London regularly, is totally irrelevant... what is needed, is trains with ample room/tray tables suitable for laptops, and decently fast, reliable internet. THAT is what is currently missing. Most people can carry out their entire work day so long as they have a computer & reliable access... whether they're sitting in an office, at home or on a train.

Currently we're stuck with (usually) Virgin for cross country train journeys and their train WiFi is abysmal.

Imagine if they did actually use the dug-up corpse of Jimmy Saville, propped up at a train table with a wee Tesco meal deal, to advertise their new railway. The slogan could be "Just like horrendous BBC paedo Jimmy Saville... private railways are DEAD! Hooray!"

Local jaunts around the area with ScotRail are very different to trying to travel the length of the UK though. Travelling from Glasgow/Edinburgh to London is 8-out-of-ten times a stressful nightmare, and if you're setting off from any further north than that it's even worse... and the links between major "non-London" are utter crap. It shouldn't require two separate changes to get from one top 5 UK city to another. Just utterly pish service.

I don't think the railways are that bad, they should start with the water companies and nationalise them, EVERYONE is paying for their mishandling
