Jeremy Corbyn has announced he is standing as an independent candidate in Islington North.
It ends months of speculation about the former Labour leader's political future after he was suspended from the party and effectively barred from standing for it again. Politics Live: Keir Starmer to face questions on Sky News Mr Corbyn told the Islington Tribune that he would fight to retain a seat he has represented for 40 years, adding: "We have to stand up and defend our rights." Appealing to life-long Labour voters he said: "I am here to represent the people of Islington North on exactly the same principles that I've stood by my whole life: social justice, human rights and peace." He went on to say that "these principles are needed now more than ever before", vowing to defend "a genuine alternative to the corrupt years of this Tory government" including rent controls, public ownership of energy and water, the abolition of the 2-child-benefits cap, a Green New Deal, and an ethical foreign policy based on peace and human rights. Mr Corbyn added: "When I was first elected, I made a promise to stand by my constituents no matter what. In Islington North, we keep our promises." https://news.sky.com/story/general-e...north-13141753 |

Private health boss will run for Labour against Jeremy Corbyn…
A private healthcare entrepreneur who campaigned for a second Brexit referendum is to run for Labour against Jeremy Corbyn, the party’s former leader. Praful Nargund, a businessman behind a chain of IVF clinics who is already a Labour councillor, has been selected to stand in the Islington North seat after Mr Corbyn was expelled from the party. Mr Corbyn has said he will stand against his former party in the seat he has represented for more than 40 years, presenting a headache for Sir Keir Starmer. Just hours after Mr Corbyn confirmed he would run, Labour announced that Mr Nargund, 33, would be its candidate in the constituency, where Mr Corbyn has a majority of 26,188 votes. Mr Nargund was selected from a shortlist of two potential candidates, the other being Sem Moema, a London Assembly member. Paul Mason, the former Newsnight journalist, was among the runners ruled out at an earlier stage but said he would be “on the doorstep to support Praful”. Mr Nargund was until last year chief executive of abc ivf, a chain of more than 15 clinics set up with his mother Geeta, 54, a gynaecologist. He also advised Lord Blunkett, the former cabinet minister, on a skills report in 2022. The married father-of-two described himself on his website as “an entrepreneur and campaigner” and said that he “spent 10 years using innovation to tackle inequalities in fertility treatment”. Mr Nargund said: “I built a company on a mission to improve affordability and women’s experience of treatment. Not only did we save money for the NHS and patients, but also we created hundreds of jobs and helped thousands of people to start families.” He added he was “using my experience in delivering change to campaign on a range of issues, from within my local community to across the country” and had “campaigned on issues such as the staffing shortages in the NHS and insulating the homes of the thousands of people living in fuel poverty in our borough”. The Oxford-educated businessman has been a councillor for the Barnsbury ward since May 2022 and was previously part of the failed People’s Vote campaign for a second Brexit referendum. He signed letters to national newspapers calling for a second vote if Theresa May’s deal could not be passed by Parliament and spoke about the campaign on BBC Breakfast. Mr Nargund has also suggested that the curriculum at universities needed to be decolonised. In response to a post by the University of Oxford on LinkedIn about being a minority at the institution, he wrote: “Good to see work on access, much more to be done, but progress has to be applauded. “There is also a desperate need to address at college level as everyone at the university knows about the clear biases in certain places. And some work on actual life at the university – decolonise the curriculum, structures and environment.” He was criticised by his local paper, the Islington Tribune, which said he had “repeatedly ignored” its calls and text messages about his ambitions for the constituency. Mr Corbyn told the same newspaper: “We have to stand up and defend our rights… I am here to represent the people of Islington North on exactly the same principles that I’ve stood by my whole life: social justice, human rights and peace.” The former leader, who was suspended for claiming the level of anti-Semitism within Labour on his watch was “overstated”, remains a popular figure on the Left. He has been highly critical of Sir Keir, most recently over the latter’s stance on the war in Gaza. ‘Long-term plan to rebuild Britain’ In a statement issued by the Labour Party announcing he had been selected as its candidate, Mr Nargund said: “It’s an honour to have been chosen as Labour’s candidate for Islington North and I look forward to the campaign ahead. I promise to be a truly local MP, that represents all families and businesses that call this special place their home. Only Labour can change the country and fix 14 years of Tory failure. “A vote for Labour is a vote for getting Britain building again to drive growth, to switch on GB Energy to lower bills, take back our streets with 13,000 more neighbourhood police… make our NHS fit for the future, to break down barriers to opportunity for every child with mental health support and free breakfast clubs, and a long-term plan to rebuild Britain.” Sir Keir said Mr Corbyn’s days of influence in the Labour Party are “over” after the former leader accused the current one of “cherry-picking” candidates to stand in the Islington North constituency, where Mr Corbyn was Labour’s MP. On a campaign visit in Leyland, Lancashire, Sir Keir said: “I think Jeremy Corbyn’s days of commenting on what the Labour Party is doing are over. “What I’ve done is put a cohort of excellent candidates across the whole country, including in Islington North, because the choice at the election, wherever you are in the country, is between more of the chaos and decline and division we’ve seen over the last 14 years, which has got us absolutely nowhere, or turning a page and a fresh start and rebuilding with Labour. “My job is to ensure we’ve got first-class candidates across the country, Islington North and elsewhere. We’re putting those in place, we have almost completed the exercise.” Sir Keir was also asked about Mr Corbyn claiming Labour’s move in Islington North was “anti-democratic”. He said: “Jeremy Corbyn’s days of influencing Labour Party policy are well and truly over. Jeremy Corbyn’s decision is his decision. What I’m intent on doing is putting first-class Labour candidates in Islington North, which we have now done.” |

[LABOUR has (Friday) named an Islington councillor as the candidate sent in to try and unseat Jeremy Corbyn. Praful Nargund – who repeatedly ignored calls and text messages from the Islington Tribune inviting him to explain his ambitions for the Islington North constituency – was announced just hours after Mr Corbyn had confirmed he will stand at the July 4 general election. After blocking Mr Corbyn from defending his seat in the House of Commons as a Labour candidate, the party ran a fast track process to get Mr Nargund installed for the six weeks of campaigning ahead.] https://www.camdennewjournal.co.uk/a...slington-north Big Gamble Never heard of this fella Last edited by arista; 25-05-2024 at 08:38 AM. |

I think he stands a good chance to.
However it's right he cannot be a Labour candidate. All he had to do was accept in full the Equalities Commission full Independent investigation into antisemitism related to Labour. He refused to do so. Starmer had no choice then but to seek to remove his Labour MP status. |

Diane Abbott case will conclude on 4th June, too late for her to register to stand as MP, I think that is pretty appalling

I like Diane and really liked the late night politics programme with Andrew Neill where she and Michael Portillo were guests on weekly.
Recalling a lot of issues where she got into a right mess on policies however on TV and radio. She was ridiculed and hammered endlessly on here for it too. I'm not sure she should continue as an MP. It's possible if she is cleared to, that she could be selected on June 4th again. However I'm not sure myself on her continuing as a Labour MP is the ideal way to go now. It's not my decision to make in the end thank goodness. Last edited by joeysteele; 25-05-2024 at 10:44 PM. |

He accepted the findings, but gave his opinions on specific issues he was involved in. Starmer has given about a trillion different reasons why Jeremy.had to go, as he's never been consistent. There is absolutely nothing in his exclusion that states anything about the report. The main sticking point was Jeremy saying AS was vastly exaggerated for political gain, which was factually accurate, as even you have previously conceded. 0.3% of lab members faced as complaints . It was on the news every day and in every paper, that he and the party were anti Semitic. Folks can think what they like about Corbyn, as you coalesce around more austerity and neoliberalism, but I can't have lies or half truths told. You need to look into what really happened in the party at that time. You can still watch the labour files on YT Jews are being expelled from the current labour party for being anti-Semitic, as the party is avoiding looking into Islamophobia within the party.

I respect the fact that Corbyn stands by his principles.
Good luck to him.
