Default Edinburgh's 'tourist tax' is 5% (a room for £100, they would pay £5)

Many have stated this morning on the Media
it is so expensive, up there
this could stop some from going there.

Room for £1000, they would pay £50

But if you can find a Room for £50 a night
5% of that would only be £2.50

[The tourist tax for visitors to Edinburgh
will be set at 5% of accommodation costs,
after final details for the proposed
levy were confirmed.

City councillors will now decide whether
to back the new tax - which would take effect
from 24 July 2026 - at two meetings
later this month.

The charge, which mimics those already
used in Germany, Spain and Italy,
covers hotels, B&Bs,
self-catering accommodation and rooms
and properties let through websites
such as AirBnB.

The local authority hope to raise
around £50m,
external in funds per year via the tax,
which it says will go towards improving
the city, but businesses have claimed
it could hurt trade.

given the prices are already high for an edinburgh hotel, particularly during the tourist peaks when they are all jammed full, i don't see it being a problem

I wouldn't be bothered.
I'd pay it.
It's not a significant amount extra at all really.

How would you run a tourist economy (which Edinburgh has) without "vanity projects", I have to ponder?
