Default Microsoft to Close "Skype Down" after 21 years in May 2025

Nasty Microsoft

Just on BBCnewsHD

Online search

[As of today, Microsoft is not
planning to completely shut down Skype;
however, they have been pushing
users towards Microsoft Teams,
effectively phasing out Skype for Business
features and encouraging users
to migrate to Teams for professional
communication needs.
Key points to remember:

Skype for Business is discontinued:
Microsoft has already retired
the "Skype for Business" service,
encouraging users to switch to Teams
for business communication.

Personal Skype still exists:
The regular consumer version of Skype
is still available for download and use.
Focus on Teams:
Microsoft is actively promoting Teams
as the primary communication platform
for both personal and professional use,
potentially leading to a reduced focus
on Skype in the future. ]

BBC said None of that.

BBC :

[Skype has announced it is closing from May.

The internet chat and phone service,
which is owned by Microsoft,
made the announcement on X,
external.

It said: "Starting in May 2025, Skype
will no longer be available.

"Over the coming days you can sign in to
Microsoft Teams Free with your Skype account
to stay connected with all your chats
and contacts.

"Thank you for being part of Skype."

Microsoft made no immediate comment
when contacted by BBC News.

Skype was released in 2003 and was then bought
by Microsoft in 2011 for $8.5bn (£6.1bn).

The video calling service was once one of the
most popular websites in the world,
as businesses and individuals embraced video calls.

As Microsoft once outlined, external,
Skype became integrated with the company's
other products such as Xbox and Windows devices.

In December, 2010, tech industry commentator
Om Malik called it one of the "key applications
of the modern web", when the website suffered
a two-day global outage.

So what happened?

In June, 2021, speculation persisted
that it was the beginning of the end for Skype.

When Microsoft announced Windows 11,
its new operating system, it stated that
Microsoft Teams - which saw a boost in popularity
during the Covid pandemic as people moved
their work and personal meetings
online – would be integrated by default.

Skype, for the first time in years, was not.]

It's basically the exact same thing, they folded Skype functionality into Teams - if anything Covid revealed that Skype wasn't fit for purpose, everyone is as using Zoom because Skype was pish. That's what prompted Microsoft to start really pushing Teams in the first place.

I will caveat this of course by saying that Teams is also a heap of crap, and yet, 80% of my work life. Fun times.

Seems there's always another one to replace , I've been hearing about 'teams ' since last year.

I still remember the MSN days, and how I had to switch to Skype.

I used Skype a lot to chat and speak to people abroad and to a lesser extent, locally. It's not what we primarily use for calls among the people I know the US. It was always the "messenger" programs that people used. I've used LINE for over a decade now and it has an audio/video feature and I use that for abroad now. I use Telegram for chat/video calls with family just because video quality is still questionable at times over mobile in the US. Dedicated services are still superior. The one benefit Skype did have is you could subscribe to have a phone number or you could call a landline with it.

I've had 365 Family forever also and they just pushed us to an AI plan and added a price increase, so lots of changes at MS of late. I went in and changed it back to a plan without classic and now am back to what we were paying. I have zero need for that garbage.
