[Bank cards will be accepted as voter ID at
polling stations by the time of the next general election, the government has announced. Labour, in a bid to water down identification requirements imposed by the previous Conservative government, said cards issued by UK banks after security checks and a verification process would be added to the list of accepted forms of ID. The 2024 general election, which had the lowest turnout since 2001, was the first to require voter ID - but ministers say "far too many people" were put off by the rule.
