Default Labour allows 8 Council Allotments for Housing

This is Dumb

Labour is way behind in their mega house building
today 8 Council Allotments to be dug up
for Housing.

Was announced on GMBHD itv
today.

[Allotments are small, rented plots of land
where residents can grow their own fruit
and vegetables, and are protected from
development or sale under the Allotment Act 1925,
except with ministerial sign-off.

A government spokesperson said strict criteria
were in place for allotment sales,
which should only be made where they
are "clearly necessary"]

Debate was on Radio 5

Horrible decision, the value of allotments in terms of exercise and mental health is well documented, there are so many brown sites they can use, honestly its almost like they sit around and ask each other what can we do to upset people the most and then do it, given the precarious situation the world is in with regard to food safety as well, this decision is just inexplicable

Get out there and get more exercise so you are healthier and don't need the NHS in the meantime we are going to build over allotments and parks

There isn't a hope in hell of this shower getting in again with Starmer at the helm, they say a week is a long time in politics but no one will forget their first year in power

Allotments sold for development are to be relocated elsewhere.

They are covering their tracks , if allotment renters actually get relocated ones they will be the size of postage stamps
And they shouldn’t be selling to a middle man to make millions they should hire builders and build houses for themselves to clear the housing shortage

A relative was involved with a like for like deal involving the council in which everyone who had their old shed removed would get a new one
Half way through the project the money ran out , the ones left without sheds were told they had to buy one themselves

Part of the relocation is the purchase of new allotments. A like for like relocation. Soil has to be fertile etc etc.

These are fact that are freely available to view if you actually research it.

What it starts out as and what people actually get is two different things
Look what the labour government promised pre election and look what they are actually doing
My brother owns land and was given verbal permission over the phone then at a site meeting the guy back tracked and basically said there was no written agreement
In the end my brother got the permission that was first agreed to

In Storrington, housing association A2Dominion plans to build 78 new homes on allotment land west of Ravenscroft in the village. It says the development will include new allotments ‘for new and existing’ plot holders, as well as a dedicated wildlife area.

Sussexworld

https://www.sussexexpress.co.uk/news...ousing-5258071

so where is the like for like? and if they are building 78 homes on the allotments how can they give the same size allotments to new and existing plot holders

I guess there is no answer to how you can build 78 houses on an allotment and still provide allotments of the same size on the same plot
