Fallout 5 Gets Release Date Update After Recent Game Cancellation
It was only a matter of time before Fallout 5 officially began development. However, it probably wasn’t expected that it would be at the expense of one of Bethesda‘s unannounced projects.
Bethesda is in favor of a “surefire win” with Fallout 5
In a recent report from the Xbox Two Podcast, Windows Central’s Jez Corden suggests that Fallout 5 is now moving forward with development. Exactly which of Bethesda’s studios is working on the game is unknown. History would suggest that Bethesda Game Studios would be on the project. However, Corden believes that core team is working on Starfield DLC and the previously announced The Elder Scrolls VI.
Corden also says that Fallout 5 was greenlit due to the recently canceled unannounced MMO project from ZeniMax Online, codenamed Blackbird. Corden says the cost of MMOs, along with competing with existing successful games, like World of Warcraft and The Elder Scrolls Online, had led to Microsoft’s decision to cancel the project.
“From what I heard, it was a case of ‘Do we want to sink a ton of money into getting this to a point where it can compete with the established players in the market, or do we want to allocate that investment towards making Fallout 5?'” Corden said.
Like any rumor, it may be wise to take the information with a grain of salt. While Fallout 5 may be in the early stages of development, no word has come out from Bethesda or Xbox about the matter.
In terms of a Fallout 5 release date, it could be several years until players get to escape a vault again. In comparing similar projects, Starfield was formally revealed in 2018 and didn’t launch until 2023. The Elder Scrolls VI was announced on that same day and hasn’t received a worthwhile update since.
