Default Do you judge someone on where they come from or their accent?

When you meet a new person do you sub-consciously label them as something because of their accent or the way they speak?

Because of my accent and the education I recieved I have got the 'posh' tag my whole life and it annoys me because I feel that people don't take me seriously or sometimes disregard my opinions.

I must admit though when I see a Manchester girl I kind of think she's a bit 'rough' or a bit 'feisty' as that's the way they're generally portrayed in the media take for example Sporty Spice, Emma (BB5), Lisa (BB7) and Rebecca from BNTM3.

So please be honest and tell me what you think...

I don't judge people based on how they look or speak. I judge them on how they behave.

I know people with lots of different accents, and some I like, some I don't. It's not based on their accent though. It's based on their behaviour.

Sometimes they go hand in hand. Sometimes it dont matter. It all depends. If someone looks and sounds like a chav or a scanger or a scumbag , yes , I will pass judgement. If their are more than 7 of the said scumbags and they are coming my way , I will pass said judgement only after running to a safe place.

That's the same with me.
For example if someone is rude, sly and vindictive I will judge them on that.

I'm from quite a rough area, and I used to be good friends with a co-worker who was from a posh area. We were chalk and cheese as far as our accents were concerned, and we used to take the piss out of each other's accents from time to time, but we got on really well, cuz we had loads in common, despite having loads of major lifestyle differences. She moved away, and I don't see her anymore because of that, but we would probably still have been friends had she still been here.

I try not to judge people by how they speak or their accent, I after all have what most people not from the NE think of as a strong accent. I care more about how they are as people. Very much like Madam Stropz has said. People are people irrespective of how they look or sound.

What I do dislike rather than accents is slang, I hate it, but I still would not judge someone by it, for example my daughters B/F says oot and aboot instead of out and about and i really enjoy saying to him is that "out" with a u or a double o he blushes but takes it like the tongue in cheek way it was meant.

depends what the judgement is e.g.

Posh = 80% = Rich

Cockney = 90% = Poor / Low Brow

generally i dont judge people straight away.

No, I don't judge by accent or where someone is from. I have friends all over the country, with many different accents. I base my opinion on someone's behaviour.

^^^^^ im a bit put out with that comment as im from the same area as Emma (BB5) and i am not rough, had a good education all right not a private school but im now 23 office manager - i think if you want to learn and do something with yourself - you will if you have money are not. Nothing to do with if your common or posh.

I'm always judged by my accent, because like Sunny, I have what some would consider a strong NE accent. This always goes hand-in-hand with being common and uneducated and people judge me constantly.

When I went to University open days I could see people giving me second glances when I spoke cos I was at good Universities but speaking like a "commoner". Also, my English Language teacher (who is also a Geordie) had a lesson on how to "diverge from our accent" because he believed it could hinder our chances at University if we got an interview.

Anyway, people who speak RP or modified RP are actually the people in the wrong because they've been the product of dialect levelling over time and have wiped out original anglo-influences. So be proud of accents!!

Edit: Plus, people keep making me say "Byker Grove".... my god.
