[Former Conservative Chancellor
Nadhim Zahawi has defected to Reform UK. The former MP said he felt the UK had reached a "dark and dangerous" moment, and the country needed "a glorious revolution", as he outlined why he was joining Nigel Farage's party. Zahawi was chancellor for two months under Boris Johnson and served as a government minister from 2018 to 2023. Farage unveiled Zahawi's defection at a press conference on Monday morning, making him one of around 20 former Tory MPs to join the party. Speaking at the press conference, Zahawi said problems with free speech "on X or even just down the pub" was one of the reasons he was joining Reform.] https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0lxn75gw1do A Big Win for Reform UK Last edited by arista; 12-01-2026 at 12:42 PM. |

They wouldn't want her, not in her wildest dreams...
Good they addressed the whole Twitter thing at the press conference. Of course that won't stop dullard Lefties grabbing at it because there's nothing else...

Reform is likely going to be getting a bit overcrowded with failed or failing, already rejected or soon to be rejected Conservatives.
It's more like a drop in centre for dumped Conservatives. Nothing much REALLY new about Reform that I can see anyhow. |

![]() Think they are making a mistake with this guy, a known tax fraudster and he said he would be a Tory until he died, so he is not to be trusted

It's happening to stop Reform from being a genuine alternative to the two main parties.

Exactly! They're losing their appeal of being the alternative vote against the establishment imo.

They acknowledged this in the pre conference with a great response. It was something like "I don't think he's racist anymore xx (towards people who assimilate and pay tax xx)"
... says the man who was fined for not paying tax. “A vote for Reform is a vote for change... Nadhim Zahawi, Reform party candidate and former Conservative Chancellor Nadine Dorris, Reform party candidate and former Conservative minister Danny Kruger, Reform party candidate and former Conservative minister Jonathan Gullis, Reform party candidate and former Conservative chairman Jake Berry, Reform party candidate and former Conservative chairman Andrea Jenkyns, Reform party candidate and former Conservative MP Maria Caulfield, Reform party candidate and former Conservative MP Adam Holloway, Reform party candidate and former Conservative MP Marco Longhi, Reform party candidate and former Conservative MP Ross Thompson, Reform party candidate and former Conservative MP Lia Nici, Reform party candidate and former Conservative MP Lee Anderson, Reform party candidate and former Conservative MP Chris Green, Reform party candidate and former Conservative MP Sarah Pochin, Reform party candidate and former Conservative councillor David Jones, Reform party candidate and former Conservative Senedd member

This guy moved because of his ego. That's it. Reform are doing well in the polls, he's a disgraced tax-dodging Tory MP, so he jumped ship because he's a glory hunter who wants to leave behind his previous indiscretions.
Anyone who has an issue with benefits being cut for working class, pensioners and the disabled but thinks this guy, who dodged millions in tax, is on their side needs to wake up. It's embarrassing at this point. |

Whoever they were, then should NEVER have been in the Labour Party at all. However I kind of disagree with you. The more extreme elements of voters that support Farage's Reform lot currently, could well be turned off if looked like connections to Labour could go to Reform. There's nothing, not a single thing in Farage's Reform set up that could or should appeal to anyone claiming or ever claiming to have been Labour. Unless they've acquired something like unsavoury prejudice against other human beings. Policy wise there's nothing in Reform that's remotely like Labour, past or present Labour either. I could understand Labour connections going over to Libdems or Greens or even the Corbyn WHATEVER Party. However no real Labour ever thinking people could. Never to Farage and his more cult like mob. NO Way. |

Reform need to be a bit careful. Him defecting to reform is actually giving people a reason not to vote for reform.

Is Angela Rayner still a Labour MP and predicted to make a big comeback? Because looking at all the criticism of Zahawi's financial dealings, and the fact he did nothing Rayner didn't do, i wondered if the only difference is that she's Labour and he's Reform. And he was said to be the richest politician in the House and I know that doesn't sit well with some people.

I’ve never ever in my life thought about voting Green until Zack Polanski and while I think sometimes they’re a bit of a pie in the sky party, Zack seems to be an honest and forthcoming leader. He answers questions with answers not with questions to deflect. I think we just need a leader that isn’t isn’t ethically or morally bankrupt. |
