Default Why do we have some messed up sexual content in TV & Film?

I didn't know exactly which section to put this in, but I've just finished watching an Anime Series called Brave Bang Bravern. Which in my view was getting kinda murky with it's sexualized writing around a character called Lulu, which I will get into last on my list of rants due to the fact that I think that it might possibly be the most offensive imo.

And it's not just modern Media either (so I'm not being a boomer about modern TV) because the first two up that I'm going to mention in detail are old Shows from the 90's/early 00's. Admittedly theirs are more shallow/petty complaints on my end, but I still think that there's validity to what I'm saying about them, hence why I'm still going to mention them on this thread.

And just to add not all of them are sex scenes, but these Shows were clearly trying to aim these scenes at certain demographics when making them, and it wasn't necessarily to enhance the plot.

Noir:
- Two different kissing scenes from (imo) not so good looking women towards each other. Normally sexual scenes are there for fan service. And I just feel like Noir might've missed the memo on that with all due respect.

It's a good Anime though. Just to add that.

Twin Peaks:
- The weird foot fetish duo. I know that it was only a couple of scenes tbf, but again it was just not very appealing to my personal taste.

Sinners:
- A Sex scene where drool is active in the scene shall we say. And that's all that really needs to be said on how ****ed up that really is.

- That one dude's girlfriend saying that she's "dirty down below" and needs to clean herself up first, ending with the guy saying "I just want to taste you” with the scene then carrying on for a little bit longer past that dialogue.

- Seeing Michael B. Jordan stick his penis inside an overweight woman's butt. Like with all due respect, why did we need to see that?

Brave Bang Bravern:
- The Show every so often would find a way of having Lulu either naked, in a Bikini, or in the one episode making sexual comments back and forth with a Robot (I wish that I was kidding) sadly it was extremely uncomfortable to watch the Show sometimes due to these scenes.

Here's a picture of the character, just so nobody thinks that I'm being unfair towards the Show.

Imo it was just a bizarre thing for the Show to do, but maybe other people will view it differently.

And an honourable mentions to American Horror Story: Coven and 13 Reasons Why for Masturbation scenes.

And I know that some people are going to think that I'm either being a prude or being some other stuff that might be partially true tbf.

But I promise that I am not being a prude, I wouldn't have been a huge fan of Dexter or GOT if I were a prude about this sort of stuff.

I honestly believe that some of these writers love to be weird or revolting for some reason.

Have you guys noticed an increase in weird sexual content in Media?

And I've just thought of another close encounter of the gross kind in Entertainment... And that's Dispatch with their Invisigal masturbation scene.

90's anime would've added him in as a comedy character (usually in the extremes for Japanese media) and it would've been hilarious, let's be honest. The more extreme stuff still would've had a smaller niche or those tidbits reserved for manga. They were usually sanitized out of the OVA/TV releases.

I think the trend to oversexualize media is probably due to the fact that writers lack any real imagination (and probably real world experience...). The in-between the lines stuff is what pulls people in and keeps them interested in the character.

Mentioning this as a possible reason, Japan reached this point much sooner than we have in the West and they are very destigmatized to sexual content in general.

If you have been an anime convention recently, or even a book store, there's so much "smut". That seems to be your main complaint, that it's become too prevalent across all media, which I largely agree. I like that there isn't a stigma as much and people can write more freely and not have their member of society card revoked, but think it cheapens the story just because of how lazy it is to implement. For anime anyway, badly written sexual anecdotes in English versions were found in fanfics (X-rated or not), but modern anime have picked up on the popularity of that and now that fan service can be found in the original adaptation.

These examples are touching on the literary side of it, but the trend is the same as many materials and tropes are sourced from reading material (especially regards to Japan and manga):

If I had to guess, it's the early access to porn and how much more socially reclusive we have become have added to more people becoming de-stigmatized towards sex. So what stood out to older generations as "too far" probably just seems all the same for another demographic as they're more accustomed.

Why Today's Teens Are Having So Much Less Sex

Quote:
As their lives become more mediated, young people who lack real-life sexual experience trivialize their own real-world senses, emotions, and needs—for example, for touching. As sex for young people becomes less and less about the five senses, and more about images, it also becomes less a vehicle for connection between them, and thus, connection becomes a weaker motivation for sex.

Young people are also generally less curious about sex than young people used to be. While previous generations of young people felt that much of sexuality was mysterious, today's young adults understandably but erroneously feel they’ve seen it all via porn, and so they’re simply less curious and less motivated to investigate it.
Willing to bet anime and media aren't targeting us in the 30+ group. Will be interesting to see what happens to these groups as technology ages and if they go through a change in mindset.

You do make some interesting points that I agree with.

For me with Smut I'm kind of a simple person when it comes down to it.

1. In a story medium like Anime, the sex scene would serve a purpose to the story.

2. The characters in question actually look good (which will be subjective, I know) but in some of these cases I would argue that a lot of people would agree with me that the Fugly are having sexual content nowadays, which does kinda go against the grain of why that type of content exists.

And 3. If the writers have ticked off the first two, then I personally think that things like drool shouldn't be seen as "sexy” but that's just me I suppose.

You definitely make a good point about people becoming desensitized to weird sexual fetishes, because I remember DC releasing a Harley Quinn Comic a couple of years ago where she farts all of the time.

Like what happened to good-looking woman and good-looking guy just having sex?

I made a similar point a while ago but about the proliferation of tv adverts that have sexual or vulgar connotations ..

The Advert that I find to be the most gross for that is this one.
