At least three people have been killed and 14 more wounded in a mass shooting in Austin, Texas on Sunday morning.

Police said the shooter, a male who has not been identified, was killed by officers returning fire.

The shooting unfolded at Buford's bar on West Sixth Street in Austin's Entertainment District just before 2am on Sunday, officials said.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said 17 total people were shot - 14 injured were taken to hospital, and three were pronounced dead on scene. Three of those hospitalized remain in critical condition.

The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force said Sunday that it was joining the investigation, indicating that terrorism is being probed as a possible motive.

Davis described the shooting as a 'tragic, tragic incident', and praised the bravery of responding officers who were 'faced with an individual with a gun.'

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson also said he was 'very thankful for the speed with which our public safety officials responded to this... I don’t think there’s any question that it saved lives.'

Footage shared to social media showed a heavy police presence at the scene, as a shirtless individual lay dead in the street.

Separate footage showed partiers crouching in fear inside the bar as police arrived on the scene, before several more gunshots rang out - indicating the gunman opened fire again as law enforcement arrived before they were shot dead.

The identities of the victims and the suspect have not been released.

The early investigation shows that a suspect circled the block around the bar several times in an SUV before the shooting, she said at a news conference.

Four sources familiar with the investigation identified the suspect as Ndiaga Diagne to NBC News. Diagne is a 53-year-old naturalized citizen from Senegal who was in the U.S. for 15 years.

“At one point, he put his flashers on, pulled down his window and began using a pistol, shooting out of his car windows, striking patrons of the bar that were on the patio, and out in front of the bar,” Davis said.

The suspect then parked the car and walked out with a rifle, shooting some people who were walking by, Davis said. As he walked along West Sixth Street, Davis said, officers encountered the suspect.

He was shot and killed by officers at that time, the chief said. Texas officials have not yet identified the suspect.

Investigators are trying to determine whether or not the shooting was the result of an act of terrorism or an individual with mental illness, four people briefed on the matter told NBC News. Those people emphasized that the investigation is in its preliminary stages and information can change.

Based on the early stages of the investigation, Diagne appears to have been a lone actor with no state ties, according to sources.

Alex Doran, a special agent with the San Antonio FBI field office, told reporters that the federal agency is working with local police on the investigation.

“There were indicators that on the subject and in his vehicle that indicate potential nexus to terrorism,” Doran said. “Again, it’s still too early to make a determination on that.”

President Donald Trump has been briefed on the Austin shooting, the White House said on Sunday.

Investigators are trying to determine whether or not the shooting was the result of an act of terrorism or an individual with mental illness, four people briefed on the matter told NBC News.

No other details regarding the suspect’s identity or potential terrorism ties were provided. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is also taking part in the investigation.

Buford’s is in the downtown area, just 2 miles from the heart of Austin’s University of Texas campus and less than a mile from the Texas Capitol building.

Robert Luckritz, chief of the county’s emergency medical services, said three people were killed in the shooting. Authorities later clarified that this included the suspected gunman.

Another 14 were transported to hospitals, three of whom are in critical condition, he said.


Paramedics were already positioned in the entertainment district at the time of the shooting, according to Luckritz.

“We received the call at 1:59 a.m., and within 57 seconds, the first paramedics and officers were on scene actively treating the patients,” he said.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson credited both police and paramedics for moving quickly after first receiving reports of shots fired.

“I want to say ... that I’m very thankful for the speed with which our public safety officials responded to this,” Watson said. “I don’t think there’s any question that has saved lives.”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott prayed for the recovery of all the victims in a statement Sunday, adding that the entire state mourns for those who were killed.

"This act of violence will not define us, nor will it shake the resolve of Texans," Abbott said.

Though any potential terror ties have yet to be confirmed, Abbott warned anyone who "thinks about using the current conflict in the Middle East to threaten Texans" that the state will protect its citizens. Abbott appears to refer to the joint military operations between the U.S. and Israeli governments against Iran, killing the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

"Patrols have been increased at vital energy facilities, ports, and along our border," Abbott said. "We have bolstered cybersecurity personnel and deployed unmanned aerial surveillance to monitor and protect critical infrastructure sites."

Texas lawmakers offered their condolences and support to Austin officials in the wake of the shooting, including Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, who said he talked to Watson to offer assistance.

Cornyn wrote on X that he was proud of the "lifesaving speed" from police and emergency medical services.

"Pray for the families of the dead and injured," Cornyn said.

Rep. Wesley Hunt, R-Texas, and Democratic state Rep. James Talarico also responded to the shooting on social media. Both men are currently among those campaigning for Cornyn's seat in this year's election.

Hunt said in a post on X that he and his wife were praying for the victims and their families.

"We are grateful for the swift and courageous response of law enforcement, whose quick action stopped the threat and prevented even greater tragedy," Hunt said.

In Texas, it's well known you're not allowed to carry a weapon to places that generate 51% of its revenue from alcohol sales. So like schools, it's easier to find a gathering of that can be taken out very quickly with less likelihood of being easily stopped. Protests are usually policed in TX cities as they call units that are trained in crowd control from other departments as-needed at anytime so those would not be ideal targets. Constables sometimes work them also as "EJs" (Extra jobs).

…I looked this morning for an update on the victims but so far as I know, they haven’t been named yet…the only information reported atm is that they were two customers and obviously the third was the shooter themselves…I imagine the victims may be known today …no more deaths reported of any of the 14 injured anyway so that’s hopeful…

Jorge Pederson

Jorge Pederson was 30 years old, according to APD. An online fundraiser for funeral costs described him as "an inspiration in Mixed martial arts."

"His impact at the gym was that of a welcoming, warm and tough presence that changed many lives for the better," the fundraiser said.

"Jorge had a bright future that was cut short in the March 1st Austin, Texas shooting at Buford’s Bar. He will not soon be forgotten," it continued.


Savitha Shan

Shan was a 21-year-old dual-degree student at the University of Texas at Austin. She grew up in Austin and was a graduate of Baranoff Elementary School and LASA High School, a friend confirmed.

UT President Jim Davis acknowledged Shan's death in an email to UT students and staff.

"Today, it was confirmed that among those who lost their lives is one UT student. A child of loving parents. A loyal friend to many. A Longhorn preparing to change the world. It is devastating, and I know all of us are grieved by this horrible news and we will remember her," Davis said.

In the email, Davis also confirmed that other UT Austin students were among the injured.


Ryder Harrington

Harrington was a 19-year-old student at Texas Tech University, where he belonged to the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He graduated in 2024 from Austin's Westwood High School, and played on the baseball team there through his junior year.

In a tribute post on Instagram, the fraternity described Harrington as “a beloved son, brother, and friend whose kindness and presence touched countless lives.”

“Ryder had a rare ability to truly enjoy life to make people laugh, to make moments feel bigger, and to make ordinary days unforgettable,” the post said. “If anyone embodied what it meant to live fully and love deeply, it was Ryder.”

Harrington’s siblings also honored him on social media. His brother, Reed Harrington, called him “the best mix” of all the Harrington siblings: “He had the wit of Ryan, the heart of Reagan, and the stubbornness of myself,” he said.

“Watching the man he had become, and seeing all the lives he touched, leaves me certain that this world was robbed of a great future,” Reed added.

In a post on X, Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows said Ryder Harrington was the brother-in-law of a member of his team, and requested prayers for the Harrington family.

"From all accounts, Ryder was exactly the kind of young man who made a difference without even trying — full of life, loyal to his friends, proud to be a Red Raider and a Texan, and someone who showed up for the people around him," Burrows wrote.

The fraternity said it will hold a candlelight vigil in Ryder Harrington’s honor on Monday at 8 p.m. at 1410 Orlando Ave. in Lubbock.
