For me it has to be It's A Wonderful Life with James Stewart, I'm an old romantic!!!!!!!

More recent films though, I think ET would be up there, it's the sweetest film and I'm looking forward to the re-release

That is SUCH a hard question for me as I have so many favourite films. I've got hundreds on tape, too.

I think, though, that it has to be The King and I. And, yes, I cry at the end, every time.

With you on 'Wonderful Life' - I never tire of that film!

'Sound of Music'? Both my lads knew all the words to the songs by the time they were three, and still find it impossible not to join in loudly with any song from a musical. (No, they're not)

OH tells me he's torn between Dr Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia

Personally? I absolutely adored The English Patient. Two people thrown together by circumstance, initially disliking each other, drawn inexorably together into a forbidden grande passion he trying to restrain himself, her throwing caution to the wind........
mmmm, sounds familiar.........

There again, I am an old romantic..........

Hang on

P.S. Don't for goodness sake let Big G hire a monoplane!!!

It's really hard to pick just one fave film, there are too many.

I'm definitely in with the 'It's a Wonderful Life' group - love lots of films from that era (and earlier). 'The Philadelphia Story', 'Bringing Up Baby', 'Harvey'. If we're talking musicals then 'Meet me in St Louis' is one of my faves.

A bit more in the modern era - 'The Deerhunter' haunts me, as does 'Schindler's List'. I loved 'Field of Dreams' and 'Silkwood' and, bang up to date, 'Lord of the Rings'.

Told you it was really difficult to pick just one!! (sorry).

Ok then Favourite films, impossible to decide of course, so I thought I'd try categories of films:
Best musical: Sound of music, Meet me in St Louis, and Doris Day musical particularly, Calamity Jane
Best gangster type film, The Godfather, both 1&2, fantastic films and Al Pacino, whoooohhh!!
Best Romantic film: The English Patient,
Most innovative film: Pulp Fiction
Best film with strong women: All About Eve, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, Thelma and Louise.
Best black and white film:So many but some faves are, It's a Wonderful Life, Harvey, Bringing up Baby. Also All About Eve, in fact any Bette Davis film really.
Best comedy: Some Like it Hot

I could go on and on and will probably come back to it again.

Hello Wildchild2k1,
Did you have trouble picking a nickname too.
I love Cary Grant, so sauve and dark! Any of his. The last film I want to see was "Crocadile Dundee" so funny!
I'm going to risk a smiley or two. After my last mistake who knows. I do like them! Make me laugh!

Fave file of all time for me has to be "Gone with the wind" - even if it is 3 hours worth!

My favourite modern film has to be Shrek, I can watch it over and over again and still see new things in it.

"Its a wonderful life" and "The empire strikes back" would also make it into my top 5, along with either "Total Recall" or "Moulin Rouge".

Gosh Mark, you make me feel old and I'm only 32! Prehaps I'm a throw-Text Whiteback but give me Mary Poppins every time.

Not sure about "brief incounter" (cant spel anyway). A bit far fetched don't you think, Ally. Nice idea, though. lol

I do like this one :c olour:

Sorry!!! Mad five minutes

OOOO I love Dirty Dancing too, must have seen it zillions of times

More recently I enjoyed Moulin Rouge.
Anything Romantic/comedy is usually my cup of tea

Funny but I'm noticing that a lot of Paul+Helen fans are the romantic film fans too, or is it just soppy old me!!!!!!

How could I forget 'West Side Story' - one of the greatest musicals ever - and such a bittersweet love story.

Love 'The Way We Were', 'Sleepless in Seattle', 'Big', 'Saturday Night Fever' (language a bit much for my delicate ears though!), 'The Matrix', 'Die Hard' - oh, there are sooooo many.

Any film from the 30's and 40's too - especially the Frank Capra ones (or similar) - they are magical and could never be remade because they belong to that era - a much more innocent time. I know they remade 'Shop Around the Corner' as 'You've Got Mail' but it just wasn't the same; James Stewart wasn't in it for a start! I loved that man.

Also loved Montgomery Clift (the younger ones amongst you will wonder who on earth he was) - he was a really good actor and absolutely gorgeous to boot. He starred in a couple of pictures with Elizabeth Taylor when they were both young and oh so beautiful.

Anyway that's enough reminiscing. Sorry to waffle on but you've got me on one of my favourite topics.

I love this topic. What is everyone's favourite British film? Difficult isn't it? Black and White films, my favourites have to be any of the Ealing Comedies such as Kind Hearts and Coronets and Passport to Pimlico. I also loved Brief Encounter. Modern British films: Four Weddings and a Funeral and My Beautiful Laundrette.
