Im gettin my results, my teachers already told me Im probably getting a B & a C coz we did exams in January so I already know what I got for them, it just depends on whether the exam board agrees with my teacher on the grades for my coursework!

I need 2 C's to go to the uni I want to go to, so unless my teacher made a big mistake on 1 of my bits of coursework I should be ok, fingers crossed!

Good luck to everyone else getting results, is there anyone else other than Wildchild?

The problem with these exam grades is that there is a devaluation with these record number of passes.

In my day we were told that the pass mark was only decided upon on the marking.

If the majority of the pupils attained 50%, that was the pass mark and the other grades were set at a relevant standard deviation either side. The normal expectation of the frequency distribution of marks was the standard bell curve.

Figure 1

If however people get higher marks, as is suggested, then under the old scheme it would be treated as in figure 2 by moving the pass mark. That way the number of A grades remains proportionate and their value is retained

By staying with a fixed pass mark, it some how takes off the shine of getting the top grade.

Sticks, I am in the position of being related to people who were or have been responsible for GCE/GCSEexam marking over the last 40 years.

Pass marks have always been a moveable feast 'within certain parameters'.

Papers are double, if not triple marked. If a person marking is consistently far of the mark others consider reasonable for a paper, they are given the old heave ho.

Marking is a mugs game BTW, and not worth the effort involved for the reward!

Absolutely, but try not to do what my sons did:

1. Spend like there is no tomorrow (both of them) So ignore all the free overdraft facilities. You still need to pay it back!

2. Party until 2 months before finals and end up with a pass instead of the 2:1 you were predicted (No 1 son)

Even so, have a blast!
