The past week has been very hard for me.
I went for a test the other week as my blood sugars were too high (I am 30 weeks pregnant). I was asked, because the results were abnormal, to go the the specialist Anti-natal Diabetic clinic. I got there and there were 2 doc's, a dietitian and a specialist nurse all waiting for me at the clinic. They told me that my blood sugars were much too high, normally they should be between 4-8 but mine were 19!!!!! They also said that I had to be admitted to hospital to get these sugars down and that I would now need insulin. They couldnt say if this was permanent but I have found out today it is. I really dont know how to feel about this..... part of me just says get on with it and the other part of me is struggling with knowing that I am going to have to inject myself for the rest of my life and be so careful. So yeah...... I'm Type 1 and it sucks! |

Sorry to hear that Kiz
![]() On top of everything else I bet thats the last thing you wanted to hear! My friend is diabetic and everything surrounding it becomes routine and nothing to worry about so you don't have to be constantly away and things. |

Awww sorry to hear that. I was guessing it was gestational diabetes (my aunty had that with one of her children) when I first read it, but it sounds pretty bad especially if it seems to be a permanent thing.
Hope you manage to cope and get the support you need, I personally would be squeamish at the thought of injecting myself but I'm sure you'll learn to live with it. |

Thanks guys, it helps that I have the support here. I have also joined a Diabetic forum which has loads of regulars who are all willing to lend help and knoweldge.
Its just such a shock. I did have the hope that after the baby was born it would go away but like I said, its not going to. The injecting isnt so bad.... it only hurts if I am tense or stressed but it means the baby will be born a lot earlier. She is fine btw..... one healthy kicking baby inside ![]() I just dont know how to feel really |

Hey again Kiz - I'm sorry i've come back to hear this bad news.
![]() I'm not sure that there's much more I can add, except my sympathy. Seems like you're being as resourceful as you can at this point, what with the joining of the Diabetes Forum etc... One of my best friends has Diabetes.. not sure which type, but he requires injections twice daily for the rest of his life, he's currently 17. If it's any consolation, he's able to lead a next-to-normal life, bar the injections. He does everything that everybody else does - eating and drinking (albeit in moderation), and is a world-class sprinter. So, i think the point I'm trying to make is, although I speak from a priviledged position, and without personal knowledge of the disease, that it's nothing short of managable. Again, though, i'm sorry that this has happened to you. |

Sorry to hear that kiz but as people have said, it shouldn't effect you too much as a mate of mine also has it, has done for years and I only found out the other week, it really hasn't effected him in any way.
But still, sorry to hear it. |

Thanks guys,
I had a long chat with Red last night and it just going to take some time to get used to. I guess I am still playing around with the right amount of insulin I need. I guess the healthy eating will help me stay in shape when the baby is born. I just have to remember to do my shots everytime I have a meal to help my body with the insulin I dont make. I have my diabetic clinci appointment tomorrow and I am hoping to go and have a scan..... one to make sure she isnt too big and the other to have a peek at her again ![]() But I am feeling much more possitive about it today ![]() |

Hey Kiz, you never take the easy option do you!! honey it will be fine, I promise. Yes it is life changing but you can make that into a positive for you. Healthy eating is good, exercise is good it will mean that once your little treasure is here she will get out in the pram for lots of walks!
My best pal is diabetic and never lets it limit her in any way. In fact we have a laugh as she always makes us check our blood sugar levels when we are with her, she says that if she has to nick her own finger then we have to do ours!! evil or what? Honey once you get used to everything you will settle into a routine and it will feel "normal" to you. I think once baby is here it will be much easier for you xxxx |

yeah i agree, once your daughter is born, you`ll probably be too occupied with her that the injections and food monitoring will just becom normal too you and it wont be on your mind as much

WOW 19 is just a tad bit higher than it should be!
![]() What a week you're having. The good news is that you've had it diagnosed and you're having it treated. I have two friends who are diabetic. One takes medication (type two) and one has type one like you and has to inject regularly. At first she was in total shock but she had to get herself used to it. She found she could still eat the things she wanted to in moderation and drink too but she needed to adjust her insulin and keep an eye on her levels. I know it can't be very nice having to inject yourself daily but you will feel the better for it. I have to take medication daily and without it I am in horrendous pain, that's life and I quickly got used to feeling better and happier - You will too. ![]() |
