Default Year you were born - choose a song

Next week the theme of Pop Idol is the year the contestants were born.

If you could select a song from the year you were born to sing - or listen to - which would it be.

I saw this site mentioned on DS - http://pages.map.com/~freek/look.html - It has loads of songs from different years. Also http://www.everyhit.com/ . Only trouble is you are not always familiar with the song from the year of your birth so I'll have to have another look before selecting one.

Honey by Bobby Goldsboro

One of the sweetest saddest songs I've ever heard, didn't know it was in my birth year!

It will have to be Daniel - Elton John. I have sung this at various Karaokes - including a small pub called Sam's Bar when I lived in Copenhagen. It's a favourite song of mine for many reasons.

I love that song Andy! I was going to call my son Daniel after the song, but it had become too popular so I changed my mind!

Still think of it as his song though!

There's load of songs that I don't know from the year I was born!

For novelty value I could pick "Space Oddity" by David Bowie or "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree"

However, on a real level I would probably pick either:

"Midnight train to Georgia" by Gladys Knight and the Pips
"Until you come back to me" by Aretha Franklin

There's loads I don't know from my year either Kaph.

I think would probably chose

'Anyone who had a Heart' by Dionne Warwick, but on a completely different level I have always loved 'Puff the Magic Dragon' by Peter Paul and Mary.

Snap ROB, but I did find a site for us 'oldies but goodies'

I came up with 'that old favourite'

If I Knew You Were Coming I'd Have Baked A Cake.

and I would too - one of my special banana and lemon ones.

Oops.

You know how you don't recognise many of the songs on that page I mentioned - http://pages.map.com/~freek/look.html

Well I've just noticed that these are American chart songs. Sorry.

Here's one for UK charts - http://www.twcforum.com/index.htm - Do a search on the top-right of the page.

Also http://www.everygit.com/ and http://www.derekthomas.co.uk/trivia/ukhits03.htm

I've thought the same Janette, when I eventually get around to having kids. Guess I shall see when the time arrives or go with a name that's popular and trendy.

Wanted to call our son Daniel or Ben, but they just didnt go with our very Irish surname.

Sons favourite for the year he was born is Oliver's Army - he always gurgled when it was on the radio - in fact he still loves it.

When our daughter was born the only thing to get her to sleep was playing John Lennon's Woman better than any lullabye

Number one when No 1 son was born was Mouldy Old Dough by Leiutenant Pigeon

and for No 2 son, just like you James,
it was Kung Fu fighting!

Fantastic tunes (not). Who says music was better in the past!!

Causes great hilarity in our household anyway!

Bit of (sad) trivia here:

When Paul was born it was 'Save your kisses for me' by Brotherhood of Man

And for Helen - Rivers of Babylon - Boney M

What about selecting a film from the year you were born.

There are lists of films on this site. Click on the relevant decade under Movie Archives.

My choice is Phase IV - a film about ants.

I remember that film, being a bit of a horror buff. It's about Scientists communicating with ants, and poor old Nigel Davenport has a grisly end. Great film though.

My film from the year I was born would have to be The Sting.

I think my choice would be "The Day of the Jackal".

It was shown recently on BBC2 and is still a great film!

I've found a couple of classics from when I was born.

Sunset Boulevard and All About Eve.

How have I managed to miss this topic until now!

There are LOADS of great 'golden oldies' from the year I was born . . . . . but my favourite has to be a toss-up between 'Living Doll' by Cliff Richard and 'One Night With You' by Elvis.

As to a film I think it would be 'Some Like It Hot'.
