Executives at the BBC have apparently scuppered a plan by Jonathan Ross to interview convicted rapist Mike Tyson.

Ross's production company Hot Sauce had mooted the idea to have the former world heavyweight boxing champion as a guest on Ross's chatshow, says the Daily Mail.

However, a spokesman for the BBC said it was "decided he wouldn't be right on this occasion". Tyson, 42, was convicted in 1992 for the rape of Desiree Washington, a Miss Black America beauty contestant. He was sentenced to six years behind bars and served three before his release in 1995.

The row comes after Ross's suspension from the BBC after he and Russell Brand left a lewd voice message on the phone of Fawlty Towers actor Andrew Sachs.

Conservative MP Philip Davies said: "This is the latest in a catalogue of errors of judgment made by Jonathan Ross. The BBC should have got rid of him when they had the chance."
