Default Windows XP/Vista. (Help)

so as im a student at university, the university supply free downloads of VISTA or XP im on xp already, and on my old computer, i remeber that i installed xp on it when it was originally 2000, then when i used to start it up it would allow me to chose wether to log onto the xp version or the windows 2000 version, i was wandering how i could do that to mylaptop, its currently on windows xp, and i want to install vista as well i have the cd its windows vista buisness.

also wandering if i installed just vista would it delete all my programmes and files.

any suggestions are apprecaited xx
