The greedy Spice Girl pocketed £10,000 from a festive fundraiser in aid of terminally ill kids. She turned from Scary to Scrooge by refusing to waive her appearance fee for helping the Make a Wish Foundation. Mel—who's set to rake in up to £10million from the band's reunion tour—did a brief turn at the fundraiser at Selfridges in London this week. An insider at the store fumed: "All Mel B did was sing a couple of Christmas songs, sign autographs and mingle with the crowd collecting donations in a plastic bucket. "And for that she pocketed £10,000 that should have gone to needy kids. "Many people felt she should have waived her fee. It's the least she could have done to help raise cash for the kids." Dreams Mum-of-two Scary—real name Melanie Brown—turned up at the Oxford Street store on Monday with new hubby Stephen Belafonte. She helped sing Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and Jingle Bells in the carol singalong then wandered round with a donations bucket with celebs Martine McCutcheon and Irish model Jasmine Guinness. The fundraiser will help make dreams come true for terminally ill kids, such as trips to Disneyland or to go swimming with dolphins in Florida. Mel B's £10,000 fee is believed to have been settled with her US showbiz agents International Creative Management in two payments. The insider added: "Everyone was thrilled when Mel B agreed to appear. "With the Spice Girls in town for their tour it was a real coup to get her. It's shameful shoppers gave up their hard-earned cash yet here was a Spice Girl giving nothing." ![]() The band's world tour is expected to earn £10million each for Mel and the other girls—Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm and Geri Halliwell. Ticket sales alone for their current 17-gig run at London's O2 arena will generate £25.5million for the band. Mel B, 32, is desperate to make money out of the band's reunion after her career flopped when the Spice Girls first split. In their 1990s heyday they each earned £6million a year but after going their separate ways in 2000 Leeds-born Mel was hit the hardest. She was dropped by Virgin Records after her debut solo album reached only No 28 in the charts. According to accounts published this year, her company Money-spider Productions was worth £12,000 in 2006, after a £5,000 loss. The figures show she didn't make a penny from the Spice Girls last year. Mel is also set for a child support court showdown with film star Eddie Murphy over their eight-month-old baby Angel. The knowledge Mel's greed was about to be exposed seemed to have prompted a change of heart —or, at least a change of policy. When the News of the World contacted her Agents ICM at 5pm Friday, they took four hours before calling back at 9pm to say she would not comment. By 11.30am Saturday there'd been a rethink. Her British spokeswoman contacted us to say the fee would be donated to kids' hospitals in America, adding: "The cheque's in the post." |
