Default Reporting an untaxed vehicle

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/index.htm

If you see a vehicle on the public road (car parks, driveways or housing association parking spaces don’t apply) with an out of date tax disc, you can report it online, by telephone or by post. You don’t have to give your name. Your report will be investigated and enforcement action taken, if needed.
What you need to report
Provide the details about the vehicle:

registration mark
make, model and colour
Provide details about the location of the vehicle:

eg outside 24 Anystreet, Anytown, Any Postcode)
any feature landmark eg opposite telephone box
If possible, provide:

the time the vehicle can be seen on the public road
name and address of the owner
Report the vehicle
Use the information you have gathered to report the untaxed vehicle:

Online

Use the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency’s (DVLA) online service.

Report an untaxed vehicle online (opens new window) By phone

Telephone the national untaxed vehicles telephone hotline on freephone 0800 0325 202.

By post

Send a letter to the enforcement section at your nearest DVLA local office.

Find your nearest DVLA local office What happens next
An enforcement field officer, who will make a formal sighting of the vehicle and complete a witness statement, will investigate the information you provide and take the appropriate action if needed.
Did you know?
The work of the police and DVLA against vehicle tax dodgers makes a major contribution to road safety. Around a third of motorists reported for not having vehicle tax are committing other offences - including no MOT certificate, no insurance and defective tyres.

Oh deep joy, just another way of snitching on people. I hate that we are all encouraged to tell on people for minor things like this.

My husband was brutally assaulted and the police were not great in dealing with things, in fact he was made to feel like a criminal at times, yet here we are looking at ways of increasing crime statistics by shopping people for an out of date tax disc!

Sunny, I obviously don't know the details of your husbands assault. But for arguments sake lets say he did not know is attackers. The police are asking for witnesses and I saw the whole thing and know who did it. Now if I come forward am I a snitch in your eyes, or some one doing the right thing?

Dr I see your argument, but I just hate that they are trying to increase crime solving statistics with things like this instead of tackling crimes that really hurt people. I know it is like theft etc.. but just cant feel right about shopping someone for their tax disc and getting someone who could simply have forgotten to do something into trouble.

I know it sounds petty, but as has been mentioned, most cars that are untaxed will not have an MOT and the driver as a rule will be uninsured. If these people have crash into your car it will cost you, or your insurance company money. The insurance company will get there money back one way or another, so expect your premium to go up. Lets say it goes up £30. That is £30 out of your pocket.
If someone robbed you of £30 would you expect the police to do something or would you class it as wasting police time when they could be out there catching real criminals?

With regards to forgetting to tax the car and getting someone in trouble. Yes it can happen. I know, I have done it. I got pulled over while they checked me out. As I had insurance and a valid MOT I just got a fine. I paid it with out argument as forgetting is not an excuse. In fact I was glad to find out I was not taxed as if if it had carried on being unnoticed then I could have got a £1000 fine and my car removed from the road. If had been involved in a crash then there is the possibility that my insurance company my not have paid out. That could have left me many £1000's of pounds out of pocket.

I know I would rather be told of my error. I think most people who have genuinely forgot would.

Those who are not taxed due to not having an MOT or insurance (for those that don't drive, you have to have those documents to get tax) then I doubt they ever had any intention of getting tax, so i would not feel sorry for them getting in trouble, as if they hit my car an I was not there they would drive off. No question. So it would cost me money. So **** um.
