Rock star to search for the meaning of Easter -6/4/04
Rock star Rick Wakeman is to go in search of the meaning of Easter tonight on BBC1.
In a program called "Jesus Who?" Wakeman will look at how, whilst Jesus' message was so radical that it got him, and most of his supporters killed, Christianity is "now widely seen as naff and Easter seems to be about chocolate eggs" says the BBC web site.
The rock legend who played with veteran rockers "Yes" has also been one of the contributors to "Grumpy Old Men", a BBC series taking an in-depth look at men aged between 35 and 54
But now the card-carrying baptist is to search Britain for any surviving sparks from "that first century firebrand".
"I call myself a Christian, although I've never Bible-bashed, and if something falls on my foot I say words I shouldn't," he said in the Radio Times.
"My father was a lay Baptist preacher and my mother was a strict Methodist, yet I've had the rock 'n' roll lifestyle and done lots of things wrong. I've never felt answerable to anyone but God."
As he tours the UK to see if any of Jesus's radical message survives, he will sample some rock-concert energy and "meet a Big Brother winner along the way."
The programme "Jesus Who?" is scheduled for broadcast tonight, Tuesday 6th April, at 11.05pm on BBC1 (after the Vicar of Dibley).
